Stewardship Events
Magnuson Children's Garden
Date/Time: Tuesday, August 16, 5:30 - 8:30pm
Location: Magnuson Children's Garden is located inside Warren G. Magnuson Park, right behind the Brig building at 6344 NE 74th St. Seattle (map at this link:
www.seattle.gov/parks/magnuson/maps.htm)
Stewardship events include hands-on education and guidance from King County Master Gardeners and other experienced gardeners, plenty of tasks that are easy for novice gardeners or children to accomplish, as well as some complex tasks for those who want a more advanced gardening experience. We also provide tools, gloves, and refreshments, and all events qualify as student service-learning. This vibrant, interactive, children's garden was created by community volunteers, using the ideas that have been dreamed up by local children and their parents! Magnuson Children's Garden is FREE to the public and open 365 days a year for families to have self-guided scavenger hunts and other adventures.
Stewardship event activities include:
- Weeding & mulching the beds and pathways
- Edging our "Rolling Lawn" that kids (and adults) dearly love to run or roll down, and the nearby bed-to-lawn edges
- General spruce-ups to our various teaching areas within the garden
- Making mosaic bricks for our brand new Butterfly Garden!
In addition, the City of Seattle will count each volunteer hour as a $20 in-kind donation to the garden, and a match to our Small Sparks Grant! This grant is funding the plants for our new garden features, and tools and supplies needed to keep the garden looking great. For the past 15 years, volunteers have enabled the Children's Garden to be a healthier, more beautiful, and sustainable place for families to visit for self-guided activities, for our free Family Garden Days special events, and as an "outdoor classroom" for Magnuson Nature Programs summer camps!

Help Homeless Youth
YouthCare
Date/Time: Donations can be delivered Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm
Location: 2500 NE 54th St., Seattle
It's hard for most of us to imagine carrying all of our belongings - from hygiene supplies to clothing and shoes - on our back. Homeless youth face this challenge on a daily basis. You and your family can help by donating backpacks and the supplies needed to fill them. Or you can help spread the word and raise awareness about the issue of youth homelessness by doing a drive for needed items, which is a great way to help youth get the items they need to get off the streets and prepare for life. This is also a great opportunity to start a conversation in your family and community about what it would feel like to be homeless (i.e. why are socks so important?) Your support makes a big difference! Visit the
YouthCare website to find their most current needs.
Ages: Everyone can participate

Feed Hungry Minds One Book at a Time
Family-to-Family
Date/Time: Flexible
Location: Your home
As your family gets ready to go back to school, signing up for this unique, monthly, bookish service opportunity will set the stage for a year of learning and kindness. Family-to-Family is a national nonprofit hunger and poverty relief organization dedicated to connecting, one-to-one, families with enough to share to impoverished American families with profoundly less. You and your family can sponsor a child with one book a month through Family-to-Family's
One Book at a Time program. Part pen pal, part book club, the One Book at a Time program will inspire both the young readers who give the books and the ones who receive them. Family-to-Family will match you to a child living in poverty in one of the communities they serve, give you the child's name, age and reading level, and ask you to send him or her one new book, along with a letter, each month. Your family will commit to the program for one year, sending a total of 12 books and 12 letters. The child who receives the books will be encouraged to write back to you. Visit the DGT™
Feed Hungry Minds project page for reflection ideas, book suggestions, and ways to take this project further.
Ages: Everyone can participate
