Each year the Arizona Commission on the Arts invites Arizonans to let us know how we're doing in our efforts to serve Arizona's communities. This year, we've added an additional incentive to participate in the survey: the AZArts Signal Boost Sweepstakes! If you win, the Arizona artist or nonprofit arts organization of your choice will be the subject of a spotlight profile featured on our website and monthly newsletter, and promoted on our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts!
 
Register Your School for Arizona Poetry Out Loud! 
Registration is now open for 2018 Arizona Poetry Out Loud. Teachers who would like to participate register their schools for the program. Once registered, each participating teacher/school site receives a toolkit, which includes a program guide to help teach recitation and performance and a DVD and companion guide for learning recitation-free of charge.
 
Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation contest for high school students that begins in classrooms across the country and culminates with the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington DC where champions from all 50 states compete for a total of $50,000 in scholarships and school stipends, including a $20,000 college scholarship for the Poetry Out Loud National Champion.
 
Arizona Commission on the Arts Awards $2,354,500 in Grants Statewide
On July 20, 2017, the Arizona Commission on the Arts announced 234 grants to Arizona nonprofit arts organizations, local arts agencies, schools, and community organizations. In total, the competitive grant review process for fiscal year 2018 (July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018) resulted in an aggregate investment of $2,354,500.  

The state's investment in arts organizations, festivals, and community-based programs was once again bolstered this year by a one-time $1.5 million allocation to the Arizona Commission on the Arts in the state's fiscal year 2018 budget.

Assessment is the answer to innovative arts ed  
National Endowment for the Arts Research & Analysis Director Sunil Iyengar's recent article in Education Week, "To Measure the Arts, Think Outside the Box," demonstrates the need for assessment when producing innovative arts education and the specialized strategies needed for successful implementation.

2017 AEP Annual Convening
September 6-7, 2017 
The 2017 Arts Education Partnership (AEP) Annual Convening will take place this fall at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. The conference will explore arts-centered approaches for improving student outcomes. The Arts Education Partnership is supported by the US Department of Education and the National Endowment for the Arts.

National In-Service Music Education Conference
November 12-15, 2017  
The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) returns to Dallas, TX to host the 5th annual National In-Service Music Education Conference filled with practical teaching methods, creative techniques, exciting events, and the ability to earn up to 17 hours of professional development credit.

Reba R. Robertson Award--Nominations  Deadline: November 1, 2017  
The Children's Theatre Foundation of America Seeks Nominations for the Reba R. Robertson Award. The Reba R. Robertson Award recognizes excellence in the important work of public high school theatre/drama teachers throughout the United States. All nominations must be submitted via e-mail and received no later than November 1, 2017 for 2018 Application.

The US Department of Education Arts in Education Program recently published a feature story outlining key steps for disseminating information and implementing an effective communications strategy that can be utilized when communicating work being done in the arts education field to external stakeholders such as: other school districts, potential partners, and the general public.

National Arts in Education Week
Save the Date: September 10-16, 2017   
National Arts in Education Week is a national celebration recognizing the transformative power of the arts in education. Designated by Congress in 2010  through House Resolution 275 , the celebration is designated to bring attention to this cause for elected officials and educational decision makers across the country and to support equitable access to the arts for all students.
National Arts in Education Week takes place annually during the week beginning with the second Sunday of September. This year it falls on September 10-16, 2017. Save the date for future celebrations:
  • September 9 - 15, 2018
  • September 8 - 14, 2019
  • September 13 - 19, 2020

Arts Learning and Collaboration Grants
CYCLE B Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, September 7, 2017   
Arts Learning Collaboration Grants enhance the work of school-based arts teaching and learning programs through collaborative projects taking place in-school (during regular school hours), after-school, or during summer/inter-session and in-services.   
Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants
CYCLE B Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, September 7, 2017    
Lifelong Arts Engagement Grants support partnerships that foster meaningful arts learning experiences in a variety of community settings for learners of any age. Community/social service organizations or governmental entities partnered with arts organizations or professional teaching artists are eligible to apply.

Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.

Professional Development Grants 
Cycle B Deadline: 11:59pm Thursday, September 7, 2017
Professional Development Grants provide funding support for participation in artistic development and skills building activities or opportunities that contribute to professional growth and career development. 

Eligible project activities must take place between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018.
