Gala
Annual SUSD Foundation Gala Just Around the Corner

The Scottsdale Unified School District Foundation will host its annual Quest for the Best Gala on September 9 at The Phoenician.

Two outstanding graduates from Chaparral High School's Class of 1994 will be inducted into the Foundation's Hall of Excellence at the event that celebrates not only their achievements, but also the potential of current SUSD students.

Jaime Cerreta developed her passion for visual storytelling while an excelling student at Chaparral.  The Emmy Award-winning news anchor and reporter saw her future in broadcasting while serving on the Firebirds yearbook staff and now is a fixture at local TV station KTVK, Channel 3.

Paul Konerko was a Major League Baseball first baseman for 17 years, helping lead the Chicago White Sox to the 2005 World Series title.  He batted .558 his senior year at Chaparral, when the Firebirds won the 4A state championship.

In addition to these Firebirds standouts, two current SUSD seniors, two teachers and two administrators will honored at next month's Gala.  For more information on the 2017 Quest for the Best Gala, click here.

Over the past decade, the SUSD Foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in mini-grants to SUSD teachers to help them develop innovative, new ways to educate our students. It has also been instrumental in funding the work of our teachers seeking National Board Certification.

SUSD greatly appreciates the Foundation's ongoing support of our district.  To find out more about the Foundation's work, click here.

Peachjar Digital Flyer Distribution System

SUSD now uses  Peachjar  to distribute employee-only information, as well as to deliver school flyers and extracurricular activity notices to parents, through each school's website. Just click on the Peachjar logo, like the one to the right, on your school's new home page.

This initiative is saving schools time and money, not to mention lots of trees!  Never again will a parent have to wonder, "Now where did that flyer go that was scrunched up at the bottom of Jimmy's backpack last month?"

Over There ... Chaparral Theatre Troupe Hits the Road

For the fourth time since 1998, Chaparral High School theater students performed at the world-renowned, annual Edinburgh, Scotland Festival Fringe.  The troop, under the direction of theater teacher Ed Como, took its production of

SUSD Students Write Their Way to Recognition

Congratulations are in order for recent Saguaro High School graduate Reyna He, Chaparral High School senior Milica Korizma and Coronado High School junior Angel Maravel, who were named this summer as runners-up in the inaugural Safed House essay contest for students who came to the U.S. as either immigrants or refugees.  Safed House is a Phoenix-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides a welcoming place for refugees and immigrants to share their stories.

The contestants wrote about the challenges of adjusting to life in America.  Reyna is originally from China; Milica, Serbia; and Angel, Mexico.  The competition was open this year to students in the Phoenix area and Brooklyn, New York.

Each of the SUSD runners-up received college essay mentoring from a Brooklyn-based Ivy League graduate and novelist.  Write on!
yavapaiYavapai Summer Enrichment Program

Every June for more than 20 years, Yavapai Elementary School has hosted SUSD's Native American Summer Enrichment Program.

SUSD students grades K-5 concentrate on reading and math during the morning hours and engage in fun learning activities in the afternoon.  This summer, 1st and 2nd graders read Ferdinand the Bull. Third through 5th graders read Walking in Two Worlds.  The students also write in their journals daily about what they're reading.

congressionalDoing Arizona Proud

The annual Congressional Art Competition honors the artistic achievements of American high school students.

This year's competition featured artists from 422 congressional districts. Representing Arizona Congressman David Schweikert's 6th district in the competition, with her painting An Extra Joy to My Desk, is Chaparral junior Leilani Gastelum Valenzuela.

Congratulations, Leilani!
peacockThe Art of Teaching:  Saguaro's Michelle Peacock

Saguaro High School art students have known for some time what it's like to be taught by a passionate teacher who knows her stuff and draws out the best in them.

The Michelle Peacock 'secret' is out now, and we're happy to report she is receiving some well-deserved recognition from the Arizona K12 Center.  Read more here.
