Making San Francisco a great place to grow up!
A Memo from the Executive Director
As I reflect on the recent acts of violence and hate in Charlottesville at the hands of white supremacists, I am reminded of what my parents and their parents and all of their ancestors before them taught me: "Learn from my mistakes; as the next generation, you must do better than me." I am sad that there are people in this country who have not learned from the pain of our collective past. I was born near the end of the Vietnam War, so I do not know firsthand the bloody mess of war - but I do know the enduring pain and suffering of the victims of war. I know that "divide and conquer" ends up meaning broken families and invisible wounds. I know that hate and fear lead to isolation and desolation. We have NO tolerance for a repeat of our history’s darkest days, in which communities are oppressed and torn apart by false ideologies of “better” and “other.”

We can choose to be the leaders and mentors that our children and community desire and deserve. Our children are learning from our everyday actions and words. We must ensure that we support them to become the leaders and healers that we hope for and need for our future. We must be their role models for a just society, in which love and compassion reign over hate and bigotry.

This weekend white supremacists will be in San Francisco. I strongly encourage you to find a meaningful and safe way to dismantle the hateful rhetoric from these groups and to support love and compassion. There is no way that we can do this alone - we must come together for the change that we want.

On Friday, August 25, 2017 at noon , please join Mayor Lee, community leaders, faith-based representatives, local labor members, and City officials at Civic Center Plaza to celebrate our San Francisco values of compassion, love and inclusiveness.

On Saturday, August 26, 2017, the San Francisco Human Rights Commission will host several Help Against Hate Stations throughout the City. There will be opportunities to engage in healing activities and methods of direct action that take a stand for love and provide help in the face of hate. Please also visit and share this incredibly helpful map created by Pastor Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer that lists counter-protest events that will take place throughout the City.

DCYF is committed to building a better future for all of our children and families. We urge all of our leaders, both locally and nationally, to join us in working to ensure equality of opportunity for all children, and to eliminate the many barriers to opportunity they face based on their race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Whatever you plan to do this weekend, please be safe and know that our City will stand together to prove that in the face of hate, we will show love.

Sincerely,
Maria Su, Psy.D.
Executive Director
Unite Against Hate at Civic Center Plaza
In recent weeks, our nation has witnessed hate and discrimination disguised as free speech rallies by extremist groups. San Francisco has a long history of honoring freedom of expression, but hate speech has no place in our city.

On Friday, August 25 community leaders, faith-based representatives, local labor members and City officials will gather at Civic Center Plaza to celebrate our San Francisco values of compassion, love and inclusiveness. Every San Francisco resident who rejects racist rhetoric and violent demonstration is invited to attend this peaceful rally.

Our city will stand together to prove that in the face of hate, we will show love.
