Now is the time to scout your corn fields and look for WBC egg masses or young larvae in the tassel that have not yet entered the developing ear.  This pest is fast becoming an economic pest in NW Indiana due to resistance to the Bt hybrids that previously provided control.  Scout 20 plants in at least 5 locations in your field and if 4% of plants have egg masses or young larvae still outside of the developing ear, foliar insecticide treatment is recommended.  Once the larvae enter the developing ear, foliar insecticide treatment is no longer effective.  When scouting for egg masses look at the upper leaves near the tassel.  Eggs hatch in about a week.  Fresh eggs will be white and will turn a brownish color and finally turn purple before hatching.  For more information reference the Purdue Agronomy Field Guide.  Photos and information used by permission of Purdue Extension Entomology.  To view more pictures click here
