Ships in a Bottle

Sturgis Library has recently received a gift of a collection of handmade ships in a bottle, made and donated by J. Douglas Dietrich of Pennsylvania.  Mr. Dietrich built all the ships from scratch, created the stands, and added the decorative touches.

This art form was started by sailors as a way to pass the time on-board ship.  On whaling ships there was down time when searching for whales, caught in the doldrums (no wind), or when sails did not have to be changed and no repairs were needed.  You have to picture the scene on these types of ships to fully appreciate the sailor's talent in making these types of models.  The sea was in constant motion, their hands were gnarled, and they had no tools like modern day ship in a bottle builders.  It is rare to find handmade original or even reproduction ships in a bottle, so it is truly a lost art.

Mr. Dietrich credits his wife, who gave him a book one Christmas on how to build these ships, and he has found great joy in doing it.

Each ship is intricately built and historically accurate. They will be on display in the Kittredge Room starting in August.

Don't Forget!

If you took one or more of our old bookshelves to transform for our August 13th Gala "Off the Shelf" silent auction, please get your item back to us no later than August 1st, 2017.  We will be displaying as many of the creations as possible in the Library prior to the event, and people who are unable to attend the Gala will be able to leave absentee bids.

If you have any questions about the "Off the Shelf" auction, please contact Library Director Lucy Loomis at 508-362-8448 or sturgislibrary@comcast.net.

Have you ever seen a Golden Digger Wasp?

If you visit Sturgis Libr
ary in the next few weeks, you should be able to get a good look at them. We have q uite a few that have taken up residence along our walkway near the main entrance to the library.
Solitary wasps like the Great Golden Digger
Wasp are virtually harmless.  They are a benign, gentle wasp, currently being studied by scientists, which is why we are letting they remain our neighbors.

Unfortunately, s ocial wasps like yellow jackets and hornets have given al l wasps a bad name. Golden Digg er Wasps do not guard their nests and are not aggressive towards humans. The female s have stingers but use them only on their prey. Male wasps have no stingers though they may act aggressively.

In the eastern United States, late June or early July is often whe n some of the first sightings of adult wasps occur. Nest construction and provis ionin g begin in July. Adults can be observed visiting flowers (with a preference for white flow ers ) in mid to late July through Se ptem ber for nectar, an d can be quite effective pollinator s.  Females hunt for insects including grasshoppers, katydids and crickets.

After em erging from their nest, females excavate a new nest to raise their own offspring. They dig a main burrow tunnel with smaller branching tunnels that end at the brood cell. Each brood cell is filled with insects that the female drags i nt o the nest. Once a nest is full of prey and eggs have been laid, the females constr uct an entirely new nest. Over her lifespan, each female will create from 2 to 11 nests before perishing.  The larvae hatch in a few days and consume the cached prey for the next 7 to 14 days. When the food is consumed, each larva spins a cocoon and overwinters. It finishes developing the following spring, and emerg es as an adult in July.

So... stop by Sturgis Library to observe these beautiful, industrious Golden Digger Wasps!
