Tiverton Library News and Events
August 2018

Tiverton Public Library will be CLOSED on Monday, August 13th for Victory Day.  The library will reopen on Tuesday, August 14th at 1pm.
What a Tiverton treasure Lucien Lebreux was!   He passed away on July 17, 2018 at age 89 at home with his family by his side overlooking his farm. Among the many ways Lucien added to the richness of Tiverton, was the major financial support he gave to build the new Library for the town he loved, specifically supporting the Teen Room.   He envisioned a tenant family living in the older house on the farm whose children would go up the road to the new Library.

Mr. Lebreux was a lifelong Tiverton resident and a graduate of Durfee High School before there was a Tiverton High School.  A veteran of the Korean War, he served his country in the Army, and received the Purple Heart. He was the owner / operator of Middle Acres Dairy Farm in Tiverton, where he also grew cranberries. Lucien loved his greenhouses, gardening and growing vegetables. An award winning livestock farmer, he took great pride in his Holstein Cows, was awarded the Progressive Breeders Registry Award and the 2017 Agriculturist of the Year Award .  The library community extends its sympathy to the Lebreux family.

The TECH Corner
Save Money with Tech:
Cut Out Cable
Take a look at your must have TV shows and programs. Are they available on Netflix, Hulu, SlingTV, or Amazon Prime? If so, then it may be worth swapping your cable box for an HD antenna or a streaming device like Roku, Amazon Fire Stick. These devices are available at prices starting around $35; they require power and wifi to work, as well as a subscription to whichever streaming service you pick (and you can have more than one!).

Want to know more? Check out the August 2018 Consumer Reports on the Tiverton Library's database page ( here) for an in-depth looking at cutting the cable cord. Our Consumer Reports, and many of the other databases, are free and available to you even when the library is closed.

Ask the Technology Librarian:
Q: Can I play a Blu-ray DVD on my DVD-player?

A: Blu-ray discs are compatible only with Blu-ray devices.

Blu-ray was designed to supersede the DVD format, so you can play standard DVDs (non-Blu-ray) on Blu-ray devices, but not the other way around.

You can tell if a DVD-player is Blu-ray compatible by a small blue icon that should be located on the device (usually at the front or side). Or you can look up your DVD-player's make and model. If you're still not sure, then your best bet is to get a Blu-ray DVD-player, which will play both.

The library has both Blu-ray and standard versions of movies. If we don't have something you're looking for, then we can order it from a different library.

Museum and Activity Passes!

Summertime is a great time to borrow a museum or activity pass from the Tiverton Public Library.  Thinking about going to Roger Williams Park Zoo or the Buttonwoods Park Zoo?  How about the Coggeshall Farm Museum, or the Audubon Environmental Education Center in Bristol, or the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown?  Maybe a trip to the Providence Children's Museum or the Children's Museum of Greater Fall River would be perfect for a rainy day outing.  Art lovers will enjoy the RISD or Newport Art Museums.  Enjoy a wonderful outing, and save money at the same time!  Click here to see all that are available, and reserve a pass online, or in person at the Information Desk.  Passes are brought to you by the Friends of Tiverton Libraries!
