Meal Service Volunteers
Loaves & Fishes

Date/Time: Various sites open throughout the week. Most Loaves & Fishes dinner shifts start around 4:30 and end by 7:30 pm.

Location: Loaves & Fishes dining sites are located throughout the metro area.

Looking for a volunteer opportunity for your family? Come help us serve hot, healthy meals to those in need! We invite your family to partner with our staff and other volunteers to serve our guests. We will have the food ready when you arrive around 4:30 and then open the doors to the public at which time your family will scoop, slice, and serve. You will be done with clean-up by 7-7:30 pm. Loaves & Fishes' volunteers are at the heart of every meal! Our staff works with individual volunteers as well as groups or volunteer teams. The mission of Loaves & Fishes is to provide nutritious meals to people in need in an atmosphere of dignity and hospitality. Loaves & Fishes is a nonprofit meal program in Minnesota, serving a hot meal to those in need. We are the largest "open to the public" meal program in the state, serving an average of 2,000 meals per day. We are always guided by our vision that all people, regardless of socioeconomic, cultural or ethnic background, deserve to meet their basic needs for food, dignity, and respect.

Ages: At Loaves & Fishes we are appreciative and supportive of the desire of parents and youth sponsors to involve youth in community service and to expose them to a condition of life different from their own. These youth participation guidelines provide for the safety of the youth, provide an efficient work environment and help maintain the dignity of our guests. The following age breakdowns are suggested best practices for safety and success. However, because each dining site is different, each Site Coordinator may make exceptions at their discretion and with parental input and permission.
  • Youth 16 years of age and older can help in all areas of the dining sites.
  • Volunteers aged 15 and younger may handle cold food on the serving line as well as cold beverages.
  • Youth age 13 to 15 must have one adult to every five youth for supervision purposes.
  • Youth age 12 and under need to have direct one-on-one supervision. It is suggested that children under the age of 8 do not attend unless prior arrangements are made with Site Coordinator.
Time Commitment: Approximately two to three hours per meal.

Location: 34 - 13th Ave NE Minneapolis, (located in the Keg Arts building)

Homelessness and housing instability negatively affect a child's health, development and education. Stable housing and a restorative night's rest in a bed can give kids the boost they need to catch up with their peers in school and achieve their personal potential. My Very Own Bed has several volunteer opportunities available:
  • Delivery Volunteer - This is a wonderful opportunity for families with kids, individuals, teams, youth groups and work groups, to deliver beds and Dream Kits. This is a hands-on, life-changing, outreach opportunity that allows volunteers to meet and directly impact families who have experienced homelessness. Volunteers will assemble Dream Kits and then deliver beds and Dream Kits to the families. You do not need to provide a truck.
  • Donation Drive Volunteer - Organize a donation drive in your church community or work. Collect sheets and pillows for Dream Kits.
  • Blanket-Making Volunteer - Youth groups could make tie-blankets together as an outreach activity. Groups and individuals could make quilts, knit or crochet blankets, and put together blankets for children.
