Feedback
Feedback

As the Opera Guild continues to develop new concerns and activities, we are eager for feedback from both old and new constituencies.  When we receive a question or a comment that we think will be of interest to many of our donors and friends, it will be addressed here in Viva Voce. Please be encouraged to send comments and questions to [email protected]

Some recent questions follow.

[1] When is the annual meeting of the Opera Guild? I would be interested in attending.
[2] Especially interested in financial report, which, I believe, must be made available to the public by a 501(c3)  [sic] organization.
[3] Why should I continue to contribute?
  1. The Opera Guild of Rochester, Inc., while a legitimate non-profit organization under both federal and New York law, is not a membership corporation.  That is why we speak of "friends," "donors," and "supporters" rather than "members." It is therefore not required to have an Annual Meeting, which incurs somewhat expensive formalities. We are open to your input on this issue.
  2. No one has ever asked us for a financial report! Of course, official requirement or not, a report would be forthcoming in response to any legitimate request.
  3. Please contribute because (1) we would like to continue our traditional activities as long as there is a desire for them; (2) we would like to be able to experiment with and add programs in order to attract new friends and patrons and develop ways to attract the next generations of opera lovers; (3) although we have ideas for the future, and despite our initial success with the summer fundraising event, we do not currently have another significant source of revenue except donations.

Wednesdays      09/12/18 - 12/05/18       09:30 - 11:00    No class 11/21

John Bouman, Retired Partner, Nixon, Peabody, LLP

With lectures and DVDs, we will study six French operas, beginning with the very first: Lully's "Cadmus and Harmonia" (1673), the mythical tale of Cadmus, the greatest Greek hero and slayer of monsters before the days of Hercules, in a spectacular candle-lit production with reconstructed sets and 17th century costumes, just as King Louis XIV would have enjoyed it. Other operas in the program will include Gluck's "reform" opera "Orpheus and Eurydice" (1774), another mythical story involving the attempt by Orpheus to lead his beloved wife Eurydice out of the Underworld and back to the surface of the Earth without looking at her and featuring the beautiful "Dance of the Blessed Spirits;" Offenbach's operetta "Orpheus in the Underworld" (1858), an irreverent parody and satire on Gluck's Orpheus opera which culminates in the famous and risqué "can-can;" Meyerbeer's "Robert the Devil" (1831), one of the first grand operas to be performed at the Paris Opera, in which Robert, trying to win the hand of Isabella, enlists the magical powers of his mysterious friend Bertran who wants Robert to sign away his soul to the devil; Gounod's ever popular and tuneful "Faust" (1859); and Debussy's sensuous and tragic love story adapted from Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist play "Pelleas and Melisande."

Fee $70.00 for 12 classes. You may register online beginning August 21 at https://www.oasisnet.org/Rochester-NY/Classes or call Oasis at 585-730-8800 from 9am-3pm for further information.

Jerry Floriano at Soiree
Gerry Floriano introducing the program at the Summer Soiree
The Summer Soirée (July 19th) was a success, especially considering that it was our first event of this kind. The Young Artists of the Finger Lakes Opera gave a lovely performance, and then continued to enjoy the evening with us. Amid a festive ambiance, the traffic at the bar and buffet testified to the success of our self-catering efforts. There were over 60 guests, with sufficient sponsors and donations to make a reasonable profit. Our organization is stronger for this effort and now has experience and skill in another activity useful to our non-profit endeavors.

Enjoy the rest of the summer, a highlight of which is the Finger Lakes Opera production of Dei Fledermaus on Aug 10 and 12. Fall is coming - see some of what's in store in this issue; the rest will be listed in September.

Please consider the Opera Guild of Rochester among your charitable organizations for 2018-19. Donations to the Opera Guild of Rochester are fully tax deductible and donors will receive an invitation to the Annual Recital in May 2019, which includes a dessert reception with the artists.
