Words from Will...
Creating a Culture of Value
I have a friend in Odessa who said in a leadership conference that leadership was "lifting up the value of those around you." That was 25 years ago. In light of the tensions between races, political parties and
Dr. Will Cotton

lifestyles around us, his words have continued to speak to me. In the 139th Psalm, verses 13-14, David cries out,  "For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother's womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

What if we regarded each one around us as those "fearfully and wonderfully made?" The ministry of Jesus accorded value to those who the Roman and religious society did not...the lepers, the disabled, the poor, the mentally ill, and the Samaritans. It is natural to devalue and isolate, it is divine to lift up value and include those we wouldn't naturally. For me, that means praying regularly that God will show me every opportunity to do that. It's a positive move all of us can make that models the love and compassion of Jesus. And I believe we underestimate the difference that can make.

Sincerely in Christ,
Will Cotton Signature

P.S.  Pray for the folks in the path of Hurricane Harvey.

Announcing a special CrossRoads Event...
CrossRoads Event

Help the CrossRoads Band Make an Album!
The long awaited Crossroads album is in our sights. Join us to make it happen! On September 28, please join us in the Family Life Center for a scrumptious catered meal, silent auction, and live music...all to support the creation of a CrossRoads album.

If you've been to CrossRoads worship, you already know how wildly blessed we are by both the musical talent and the spiritual leadership of the CrossRoads Band. It's our vision to expand their reach and impact by putting together a CD of their original compositions. Anything raised over and above will go toward beautifying the worship space in the Family Life Center. Further, the band is donating 100% of the profit from the sale of the CD to the beautification project.

Tickets go on sale on Sundays at church beginning August 27 (and we will accept credit cards)! If you prefer, you can email your ticket request to Terri Bowden at terri.l.bowden@gmail.com.
  • Individual seats: $35
  • Table for 8: $280
We are asking for donations of items and services to place in the silent auction. We hope to raise at least $25,000. Items and services can be anything: restaurant or entertainment gift cards, sports tickets, handcrafts or art, collectible items, themed baskets, excursions, etc. Maybe you have a service to offer, such as hair styling or automotive repair. We are also accepting direct sponsors if you wish to make a cash donation of $500 or more to underwrite the event.  We are grateful for your sponsorship and you can expect to see your name (or company name) in our printed materials on the bid tables, and through announcements during the evening.

If you would like to donate or volunteer to help with the event,
  • Contact Trisha Seguin, tseguin@austin.rr.com, to donate!
  • Contact Kathy Ford, kathyford03@yahoo.com to volunteer!

Be praying for this exciting development in our ministry!

Caring Ministry
Church Mouse

Church Mouse Adoption Day will be Sunday, August 27.
A Church Mouse is like a secret pal to a college student who anonymously sends notes, care packages, and prays for that student. Being a Church Mouse is a fun and easy way to support a young person and help them feel connected to his or her church home! Because of the expected rain due to Hurricane Harvey, you can find them in the foyers of the Family Life Center and the Sanctuary before and after the 9:40 and 11 am services. Come adopt a college student for the school year!

Church Mouse Program needs your support!
If you want to be a part of the Church Mouse program in a financial way, we give each student a $10 gift card twice a year during finals. This way they can treat themselves to a coffee, ice cream, or other treats while taking a break from their studies. On August 27, there will be an opportunity to donate money towards gift cards. Come see Jodi or Tanja at the Café to make a greatly appreciated donation. This is a very popular ministry among college students and they are very grateful for any contributions. Questions? Contact Tanja La Noue at 254.285.8705 or tanja@fumc-rr.org. If your college student wants to be in the Church Mouse Program, please turn in the information ASAP!
