Thoughts about General Synod 31
by Patty Higgins
In Traci Blackmon's candidate sermon, she spoke of the balconies that were built in churches, space to accommodate more people. As time went on it was the marginalized that was placed up in the balconies, placing those on the edges, primarily the people of color and the poor. As she continued Traci made a connection between the words space and room. The churches had made space, but had they made room? Had they made room for the people that would fill up that space?

Discovering the Other
by Cameron Harder
Discovering the Other
is an introduction to two tools that community builders have found helpful: appreciative inquiry and asset mapping. These tools help congregations see that all of life is saturated by the sacred and give them energy to begin living as if it were so. Instead of asking, "What's wrong?" appreciative inquiry asks, "What's right?" Asset mapping asks, "What resources do you have personally that we could bring to our future together?"  Out of these questions can arise a sense that every congregation is rich in history, people, and resources. Ideas emerge as people, inspired by the Spirit, listen and talk to each other. The leader's task is to facilitate, coalesce, and connect ideas, to catalyze and stimulate the development of vision. The creative connections lead to programs and projects that will enrich your congregation's mission. But most importantly, in the process they will engage you with others, with their stories, their hopes, and their gifts-to
build community.

Trip to Honduras - Dates Changing
The trip originally scheduled for this July will hopefully go in October. This trip is designed to help make a Medical Clinic at Subirana owned by Iglesia Evangelica y Reformada de Honduras more secure. It will be a building project, and if there are medical personnel who would like to attend, this might be able to happen as well. Keep and eye on this Conference weekly newsletter, and/or on our facebook page at "Maine Honduras Partnership" for more as details are developed. Blessings on your summer!  (Bruce Burnham)

The General Synod of the United Church of Christ is the national decision-making body of our denomination, responsible for giving general direction to the evangelistic, missionary, and justice programs of the UCC. From June 30 - July 4 members of our denomination gathered to consider a number of resolutions or statements of witness on social and political issues that we (members from throughout the life of the church) believe are of concern.
