2017 AACA Membership Renewal Reminder
By Stacy Zimmerman, Speedster editor, [email protected]

Every year, I feel like summer is getting shorter and shorter. With Labor Day weekend in our sights, the end of summer is closing in fast. Heck, the majority of the kids have already gone back to school!

I must make a confession though... I am honestly really ready for fall to arrive - it's my favorite season! In fact, I feel like over the last week or so I have kind of pushed summer aside and embraced fall with open arms. I've already been to a football game, bought two new sweaters, purchased my first mums of the season and (ALMOST) picked up my first bag of candy corn at the grocery store the other day - I said ALMOST!

Here at AACA Headquarters, we've been preparing for fall meet week in Hershey for weeks now. (The Hershey Region AACA has us beat though - they've been preparing since the day after last year's event!) The membership team at Headquarters has also been busy ordering membership applications, renewal forms and brochures in preparation for the next few months.

As most of you know, your AACA membership runs for a calendar year - January 1 through December 31. From about mid-September through the end of the year, the office gets a little crazy with membership renewal phone calls and mail. It's not uncommon for us to receive several hundred renewals in a day. Even though it's our busiest time of the year, making sure we get our 60,000+ members renewed remains a top priority.

Look for your first opportunity to renew your membership with your September/October issue of Antique Automobile magazine. A renewal form will be included with this issue of the magazine. Simply fill out the form and send it back to the office with a check or credit card information.

If you're going to be at Hershey, you can also stop by the AACA trailer or tent and renew your membership in person with us.

We look forward to seeing or hearing
from all of you very soon!

IMPORTANT!!! 2017 AACA National Board of Directors Election

In the September/October edition of  Antique Automobile is a postpaid ballot for the 2017 Board of Directors election. It is your ONLY ballot and must be filled out according to the instructions or it will not be counted.

Please read the biographies of all the candidates listed in the magazine and vote for the 7 of your choice. Our candidates this year come from widely different backgrounds, so please give serious consideration to those who match your ideas of what is important to the future of the club. All ballots must have 7 names selected or they will be considered "not valid" and will not be counted.

Your ballot must be postmarked by November 15, 2017.

AACA Board Member Mike Jones Receives Buick Centennial Award

Recently, the Buick Club of America hosted the club's Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration in Allentown, PA. The event was staged at Nicola Bulgari's expansive American Motorcar Complex. This fantastic complex will be the site of the AACA Grand National Meet in 2019!

During the festivities, BCA President Brian Clark made a special Buick Centennial Award presentation to each 100+ year vehicle on the show field. AACA Director Mike Jones' 1913 Buick Touring was among those 100 year old automobiles recognized.

AACA Needs YOU to be Involved in Legislative Affairs
By Jack Armstrong, AACA Vice President - Legislation, [email protected]

We need members to be more involved in and aware of legislative issues that may impact this great hobby of ours.

Items often impacted by legislative actions are fuels, taxes on sales and/or purchases, bills of sale, registrations, inspections and titles. Frequently, it is important that AACA members attend hearings in their state and initiate letters and calls to appropriate legislators.

Background information on all issues is available thru SEMA, which is a very effective government affairs organization with a history of working closely and effectively with AACA. Our contact there is Colby Martin ( [email protected] ), SEMA Action Network Director. All AACA members need to click here to get on his issues distribution list to stay informed!

I'm certain you will find this activity interesting and hopefully rewarding. Remember, the U.S. Government was founded by the people & for the people - we all need to be involved!

If this is something you are truly interested in, please consider becoming your Region or Chapter Legislative Affairs Officer. Every AACA Region and/or Chapter should have a Legislative Affairs Officer to help keep its members informed and up-to-date on legislative items of concern.

Louise Bianchi Chiotti Memorial Scholarship Award
Louise (Bianchi) Chiotti was born on June 11, 1914 in San Jose California. The Family's first automobile was a 1926 Dodge Sedan. Her two younger brothers purchased a 1939 Studebaker and took delivery in January 1939. They wanted to give it to Louise's son Dave in 1956. His mother thought it too big of a car for a fifteen year old in San Francisco and talked him into buying a 1930 Model "A" Ford Coupe. In 1959 the little Ford was a bit slow, so Dave purchased a 1959 Ford convertible. As Dave sat on the running board of the Ford waiting for the new owner to arrive his mom came and sat next to him. "You really don't want to sell it do you?" she asked. "No, I don't was my reply."  "Then don't," Mom said.

Dave and Marilyn Chiotti still own the Model "A"; it is a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1939 Studebaker came to the Chiottis after spending 40 years under a walnut tree. It is now a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1926 Dodge was cut into a truck for ranch use in the 1940's. Dave brought it home in 1976 and built a Woodie. In 2000, they donated it to Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa. After Dave and Marilyn's uncle's passing, they acquired their 1968 Cadillac El Dorado. It now lives in the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. This $1,500 scholarship is based upon the same rules as the AACA Automotive Technology Award and is awarded as funds are available. It was instituted and funded by Dave and Marilyn Chiotti as a way to honor Louise and a way to continue to support youth in the hobby. Click here for more information and to download the application.

Colorful T-Birds
By Perry Anthony, [email protected]
Chair CTCI Publicity, Classic Thunderbird Club International

How many times have you seen a classic T-bird and wondered if the color was "original" and how many were painted by the factory that color?

Well, thanks to the photography of Willy Busch in Norway and Dave Tolowitzky in Florida, who maintains the CTCI database of T-birds, the current answer can be found in  this colorful display
depicting '55-'57 T-birds.

Should you want more information or have a T-bird that should be in the confidential CTCI database, contact us at www.ctci.org

Is Your AACA Region Growing?

Recognize the hard work of your region or chapter and apply this year for the I.C. Kirkham Award. This is a little too early to actually apply, but we wanted to get the information in front of you. We suggest that you complete and mail this form immediately following your last meeting in 2016 at which you would accept new members.

Remember, small regions can compete with big regions as it is a weighted formula. Take home the big award at the National AACA Annual Meeting in February for proving to other clubs that you can increase membership with a little hard work and determination.

Completed forms must be at AACA Headquarters by December 10, 2016.

Do You Know George Bugg?
By John Wagner, President, Athens Region, AACA, [email protected]

Thought you might be interested in this video that TV Station 35 WDIG from Dublin, Georgia, did on George Bugg. George is a current AACA Athens, GA, region member, and was president for 10+ years before I became president. He is currently 80 years old and is considered to be "Mr. Car Collector" in northeast GA with a collection of 130 vehicles. George was a very close friend of Larry Bailey, long-time AACA member from Cleveland, GA. Some of the cars in George's collection were purchased from Larry over the last 25 years.

George is a buying collector - he rarely ever sells one of his cars. He is in good health, still works every day, owns a number of commercial and residential properties, and is always adding to his collection - recently adding a 1927 Hudson 4-door sedan. He has a full-time mechanic who takes care of the maintenance and, for a small fee, fellow AACA club members can take cars to him for maintenance and restoration.

The station in Dublin, which is about 125 miles south of us here in Athens, is very close to Renz, GA, where George grew up. He still has many friends in that area thus the reason for the interest by the local station.

As you will see, George is a story teller and his car collection is his number one interest. He is very sharing of his collection - every week individuals, groups, car clubs, etc. are able to see his cars. He is always willing to give a tour.

Click here to watch the video about George's car collection.

Reliability Tour
November 5-11, 2016
Savannah, GA

The Antique Automobile Club of America and the Horseless Carriage Club of America join forces every other year to sponsor the Reliability Tour. The roots of this event stem back to 1903 when an organization was formed to determine just how "reliable" these new-fangled horseless carriages were for the buying public. Today the tradition carries on, with 75 to 100 of these pre-1916 vehicles meeting "somewhere in the US" to tour a particular area for a week.

This year's tour is limited to 75 vehicles manufactured prior to January 1, 1916, and hosted by the Savannah Region AACA. The tour will start on Hilton Head Island, SC, in time for the Concours d'Elegance and move to Savannah for 5 days of beautiful sightseeing, fun motoring and, of course, some great food.

For more information or a registration form, please visit www.savaaca.org or contact Ralph Tolman, Chairman, at [email protected] or (912) 313-0598.
