August 2016

 From the Director's Desk...

How many of you who are involved with AC4C think, "What would I do without the connections and support our coalitions receive from being a part of AC4C?"  Over the years, we have seen a significant decrease in Drug Free Community Support Grantees in Iowa due to their funding coming to a close.  These communities are what contribute to AC4C success because of the wealth of experience and collaborative spirit they bring to the table.  Many coalitions continue to be sustained, while others were not able to keep their sectors meeting.  We are facing a need to cultivate additional coalitions across the state.  Iowa Department of Public Health has 12 coalitions / collaborations funded to work with alcohol specifically through their SAMHSA Partnership for Success Grant.  Many of these coordinators come to AC4C and/or participate in our monthly Monday Action Team.  In an effort to reach out to areas of the state not funded for coalition development, AC4C received a JAG grant from Iowa's Office of Drug Control Policy.  Through this funding we will find 5 communities to bring training and support to develop a coalition structure.  Identification of these communities will begin with outreach to law enforcement as many environmental strategies need a strong sector presence from law enforcement.

We continue to work with our partners who are addressing the opiate issue in Iowa.  The US Attorney General's Eastern Iowa Heroine effort is really doing a great job informing people about the emerging epidemic through Al Fear's education efforts.   CRUSH of Eastern Iowa (Community Resources United to Stop Heroine) is leading local efforts to educate.  Other CRUSH chapters are looking to be established.

Together we can make a difference. To stay up on what is happening across Iowa tune into one of the Action Team hosted by AC4C leadership each month.  (2nd Monday: Marijuana; 3rd Monday: Rx; 4th Monday: Alcohol).

Until next time... Angie
