Summer and fall legislator meetings scheduled
Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Tip O'Neill is usually credited with coining the phrase "all politics is local." It's a saying WCAAP members have taken to heart this year and put into action by meeting with legislators while they are in their home districts. These meetings are crucial to help lay the foundation that the Chapter's legislative advocacy is built upon.

Chapter meets with providers, legislators, community members in Vancouver
During the 2018 legislative session, I met with community health workers from Vancouver and Kachina Inman, vice president of equity, partnerships and policy for the Southwest Accountable Community of Health (SWACH). After talking with them, I realized WCAAP needed to deepen our understanding of access to care in the Vancouver region.

Talk with legislators included Medicaid, behavioral health
On July 30th
, 16 pediatric health care providers met with the 14th
legislative district's Senator Curtis King and Representative Gina Mosbrucker. The group included physicians, a behavioral health specialist, and nurse practitioners. The goals of this meeting were to develop providers' relationships with their legislators and to educate the legislators on some of the issues the WCAAP is advocating for.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has prepared a useful, comprehensive guide:
How to Respond to Vaccine Deniers in Public. It's 44 easy-to-read pages, divided into 11 brief chapters is an excellent primer should you consider taking on this task.
The authors caution us not to engage with these folks in public forums unless you have prepared and have had media training. But sometimes one has to or is caught by surprise.

Using the UW AIMS model to improve care for kids
In 2018, Mary Bridge ushered in a targeted program for patients and families receiving care in our high volume sub-specialty clinics. The High Risk Care Management (HRCM) program is based on both the University of Washington's AIMS model and existing understanding of the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on pediatric chronic illness.

Researchers at the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Public Health - Seattle & King County, and the Somali Health Board are recruiting VFC providers in King County to take their e-course entitled: "
HPV Vaccination: Framing the Conversation for East African Families." Participants will receive continuing education credits as well as a $25 Starbucks gift card for completing the course, and feedback will be used to evaluate the course content. AAP Seeks Participants for Study about Teen Marijuana and Media Use: The AAP Julius B. Richmond Center of Excellence is seeking pediatric clinicians to participate in a research study to develop and test a primary care intervention for adolescent marijuana use. Clinicians will be trained in a screening and brief counseling intervention for marijuana or media use and asked to enroll up to 100 adolescents ages 13-18 during well or non-urgent sick visits. Parent and teen follow-up surveys will be done by research staff. Information gained from this study will inform the development of a future large-scale trial of primary care counseling to reduce adolescent marijuana use. Nominate a 2018 HPV Vaccine Champion: Nominate a clinician, clinic, practice, group, or health system that treats adolescents in Washington for the award. Self-nominations are encouraged. The nominee must have achieved minimum vaccination coverage of 60% for HPV series completion among female and male patients aged 13-15 seen in the last 24 months (as of 6/30/18). This will be verified through the IIS. If the nominee is an individual clinician, the verification will be based on their clinic HPV vaccination coverage. The
nomination packet includes the application and full details, including eligibility criteria.

Take Back Day website is sponsored by the federal government. Both enable patients to enter zip code and then find local pharmacies or other facilities where they can return/dispose of unused medications, including controlled substances. Save the Date: Medication-Assisted Treatment for Adolescents with Opioid Use Disorders

The opioid epidemic in Seattle & King County includes adolescent and young adults who account for an increasing number of treatment admissions and deaths. Addicted adults often start using as adolescents. In July 2018, the Pediatric Clinics at Harborview Medicine Center began offering office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) for their patients with four Suboxone-waivered pediatricians. This panel discussion will bring together local experts in substance abuse including clinicians, researchers, and community partners with a particular interest in adolescent and young adults.
