Greetings Music Time Academy Students & Parents!

With summer coming to an abrupt end, we are excited to see Fall and the start of another school year!  After an overwhelmingly positive response from those who enrolled in this year's Summer Workshops, we plan to offer more sessions next year (perhaps even sooner) - stay tuned for details!

October 5th Showcase at Bombay Nick's Chai Bar
It's not quite like our big Winter & Spring Concerts, but we're happy to add another performance opportunity to the calendar! Please join us on Saturday, October 5th from 5-7pm for an evening of live music. If this first attempt is a success, you can look forward to many more showcases like these in the near future!

Focused on group/ensemble and solo performances for vocalists, guitarists, and our rock bands especially, this showcase is going to take an "open mic night" type of format. We'll have an instructor kick off the show with a few tunes, then move on to our student program. Depending on interest level, each student will have approximately 10-12 minutes to perform, with the option of accompaniment from our host instructor or a recorded backing track. All students who wish to perform must sign up in advance. Performance space is on a first come, first served basis.

Quick details:
October 5th, 2013, 5-7pm

Student of the Month
Congratulations to Joseph Andrews!
Joseph will receive (along with priceless glory and endle
ss bragging rights) a $30 Gift Certificate to Music Time Academy, as well as a $20 gift card to the Cinema West Theater in Livermore!

Instrument: Guitar
Teacher: Michael Solomon & Timothy Garry
Age: 18
School: C.S.U. East Bay
Grade: Sophomore
Student at Music Time since: August 2011
Hobbies (besides practicing):  Reading, Computer Games, PS3, Hanging out with friends

Joseph (and his younger brother, Jonathan, a former viola student) began lessons in 2011 as some of our first ever Saturday students. Loosely interested in both acoustic and electric guitar, Joseph worked closely with his instructor, Michael Solomon, who solidified his interest in music, inspiring him to try new techniques and learn new music.  We have heard two of the most (in our humble opinion) "rock and roll" distorted electric guitar performances from Joseph at past recitals, and are excited that he has recently joined with the Thursday rock band. Joseph loves the feeling and sound of playing in a rock band - understandably so!

Do you know a current Music Time Academy student with a newsworthy musical story or accomplishment from the past month that should be featured? If so, please fill out our online nomination form by following this link:  STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOMINATION FORM
Teacher Feature
For August, we would like to feature Mario Silva! As one of the longest standing instructors at Music Time Academy (on staff since 2008), Mario works with students on a variety of instruments including trumpet, clarinet, saxophone and piano.

Mario has toured the world as a performer, having played in dozens of countries with "gypsy jazz" outfit, Rupa and the April Fishes. At home, Mario performs multiple times most weeks with different groups. His recording credits are vast and varied, including several albums with Cuban roots band Pellejo Seco (featuring Grammy Nominated Chuchito Valdez), hip-hop band Bang Data, and many others. Prior to touring and recording extensively in 2012 & 2013, Mario began his career as a professional musician by age 17, regularly involved with both live gigs and recording sessions. He completed a Bachelor's Degree in Music from San Francisco State University, and later began a Master's Degree program at Mills College. In 2009-2010, Mario held regular gigs with his jazz trio at esteemed San Francisco clubs, Biscuits and Blues and Grant & Green.

Passionate about passing on knowledge to young musicians, Mario has helped many of his students reach first chair in school band, win awards and competitions, and even be featured in local news media (see article about Gabriel).
