August News at PM Press
It feels like U.S. History month at PM with three very different works (in three different formats) exploring working-class political activity in the States.

J. Sakai's lengthy and controversial history, Settlers, offers a critical analysis of the colonization of the Americas that overturns the official narrative of dispossessed European settlers. A new documentary film by Sam Mayfield, Wisconsin Rising, documents the largest sustained workers' resistance movement in American history. Arguably the most important folk star to emerge after the '60s revival, Utah Phillips's Starlight on the Rails is a 4 CD epic of music and story, recounting his life through his best songs. Intimate, droll, and fiercely felt, it is equal parts cultural history and musical memoir.

We have a plethora of great news, reviews, and events. We can't list everything happening in one email, but click on the relevant images for more info or check it all out HERE.

Wisconsin Wisconsin Rising
Directed by Sam Mayfield
DVD| ISBN: 9781629630939 | $19.95

Wisconsin Rising documents the largest sustained workers' resistance movement in American history. Wisconsin was a testing ground for the nation in 2011 as big money attempted to undo basic workers' rights when newly elected Republican Governor Scott Walker suddenly stripped collective bargaining power from the state's public employees.

Wisconsin Rising catapults the viewer into the days, weeks, and months when Wisconsinites fought back against power, authority, and injustice. As the story unfolds, democracy itself is at stake. The government in Wisconsin looks like a circus, as Republicans invent new laws daily, restricting citizens----and even elected officials----access to the State House. Our cameras are rolling on March 9th, 2011, when Republican Senators attempt to vote on the bill with no public notice as over 10,000 people pour into the Capitol, occupying its halls overnight. Dramatic footage shows Republican Senators fleeing the state capitol on a secret shuttle as thousands of Wisconsinites fill the State House and Capitol grounds in protest.

"Wisconsin Rising is up-close and personal...and political. This slice of life, a moment in movement history, captures the struggles of the American middle class confronting the corrupting power of money over democracy. Don't miss it."

"Starlight on the Rails is a musical documentary of Utah's life experiences spanning decades, more rich than any American history textbook. I can't imagine any folk fan not having this in their collection. Period."

Settlers: The Mythology of the White Proletariat from Mayflower to Modern
J. Sakai | Co-published with Kersplebedeb
Paperback | ISBN: 9781629630373 | $20.00

Settlers is a uniquely important book in the canon of the North American revolutionary left and anticolonial movements. First published in the 1980s by activists with decades of experience organizing in grassroots anticapitalist struggles against white supremacy, the book soon established itself as an essential reference point for revolutionaries.

Settlers uncovers centuries of collaboration between capitalism and white workers and their organizations, as well as their neocolonial allies, showing how the United States was designed from the ground up as a parasitic and genocidal entity. As recounted in painful detail by Sakai, the United States has been built on the theft of Indigenous lands and of Afrikan labor, on the robbery of the northern third of Mexico, the colonization of Puerto Rico, and the expropriation of the Asian working class, with each of these crimes being accompanied by violence.

"Settlers was my first, and as such my truest, study of the actual mechanics behind the expertly fabricated illusion of an Amerikan proletariat."
----Sanyika Shakur, author of Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member

The Struggle Within on Truthout
Review by Maya Schenwar
The activists that Dan Berger profiles break laws to break down chains, walls, systems, norms and entrenched assumptions. While the law is deployed to repress them, they resist by continually revealing its flimsiness and mutability; they demonstrate that it can not only be "broken," but that it can, potentially, be broken down... The activist portraits sketched in The Struggle Within make all of the many varieties of repression that comprise the criminal legal system more visible.

Dead Kennedys on Caught in the Crossfire
Review by Pete Craven
Credit to Alex Ogg for managing to pull together interviews with all Dead Kennedys original members... This book is an engaging read, and pretty much an essential pick-up for anyone with an iota of interest in the DKs and Punk in general. There are band photos, and reproductions of record sleeves, flyers, media clippings, and of course, lots of cool art by the wonderful Winston Smith. Highly recommended.

The Cost of Lunch, Etc. on We Love this Book
Review by Sally Hughes
Marge Piercy is a great poet and this is clearly evident in the way she handles words. This is her first collection of short stories (although drawn from the work of a number of years) but the same economy of phrase, depth of emotion and touch of astringency you find in her poetry is here... Many of the stories are funny, a few shocking, all are interesting and incredibly well-told. For a journey into the feminine psyche it is unparalleled.

Chris Crass in the Earth First! Journal
Interview by the Anarres Project
"In addition to challenges of power, we also need to continue to develop and experiment with successful ways to organize as united people in ways that address, challenge, and transcend divisions of race, class, gender, ability, sexuality, citizenship and unequal structural power. In the past 10-15 years, there have been some significant advances in the movement that have helped make awareness and consciousness about privilege, oppression, and power much more wide spread. There are real strengths to what is often under the umbrella of anti-oppression politics."

New Forms
New Forms of Worker Organization on Counterpunch
Review by Ron Jacobs
In order to survive in the world defined by neoliberal capitalism, workers have slowly come to realize that they must organize in new ways that respond to the new situation. A new book edited by Immanuel Ness was published with this in mind. The book, New Forms of Worker Organization, presents several case studies of organizing drives among workers around the world. These case studies explore the shortcomings of bureaucratic unionism not just in its current practice, but in its fundamental understanding of unionism itself.

DaytheCountryDied
The Day the Country Died on Musique Machine
Review by Roger Batty
Obviously Ian Glasper's book is a must have item for anyone who has even a passing interest in the Anarcho-Punk scene, but I can also see this appealing to anyone who enjoys any form of confrontational music or sonic art. As the book is highly readable and rewarding throughout, and it's thoroughly informative yet still concise and interesting over the whole of its nearly 500-pages.

The System on Now Read This!
Review by Win Wiacek
As if telling a beguiling, interlinked portmanteau tale of many lives interweaving and intersecting----and often nastily ending----in the Big City without benefit of word-balloons, captions or sound effects was not challenge enough, Peter Kuper pushed his own storytelling abilities to the limit by constructing his pages and panels from cut stencils, creating the narrative in a form akin to urban street art. Clever, compulsive and breathtakingly engrossing, this delicious exercise in dramatic interconnectivity and carefully constructed symbolism is a brilliant example of how smart and powerful comics can be.
