Different states, colleges, and even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are working to reduce the disease and death associated with tobacco products in different ways:
California Raises Legal Smoking Age from 18 to 21
In May 2016, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that raises the legal smoking age in California from 18 to 21 years old. Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, with as many as 34,000 Californians dying each year.
College Campuses Going "Tobacco- and Smoke-Free"
If passed, the newly introduced California Assembly Bill 1594 will prohibit smoking and tobacco use on public college campuses across the state. Shasta College in Northern California was already aiming for a tobacco- and smoke-free campus by spring of 2017.
E-Cigarettes Regulated as Tobacco Product by FDA
This year, the FDA extended its regulatory authority to cover all tobacco products, including Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), such as e-cigarettes. Among other regulations, a nicotine warning statement must be included on product packaging and advertising.
