A Message from Michelle It's August! To echo the words of many, "Where did this summer go?" It seems that these last few weeks are skimming past us at lightning speed. Summer always seems to bring an increase of relatives and visitors. We are blessed with a continual stream of families coming and going, children and grandchildren racing through the front door eagerly looking for their parent or grandparent, and a steady line of folks going out to enjoy the pleasures of our wrap-around front porch! With my office being located at the entrance to the porch, I am always happy to assist families and residents as they go outside to enjoy the breeze that always seems to be blowing; no matter how warm the temperature might climb. I hear laughter coming from there, snippets of conversation, people rocking in the rocking chairs and relishing in the lazy days of summer. It never fails to remind me that we are truly living in their home. As we speak, one of our residents is entertaining a friend and one of our staff just as he would on his own front porch.....THIS is summer at Pickering! |

From Farm to Table-The Fruits of Our LaborPickering Manor started a community garden this past spring, inspired by one of our green-thumbed new cottage residents, Bob Bailey. Bob and his wife Rita moved in to Cottage F earlier this year and have since planted a beautiful garden enjoyed by all who view it (see photo below!). Taking inspiration from him, the staff created a garden of Pickerings own, and with some Personal Care and Cottage residents help, it has thrived! Pictured are eggplant, tomatoes and zucchini from our own garden. The zucchini was used by Personal Care residents to make delicious zucchini bread, enjoyed by all! |

Meet the Author - Ethel Hibbs Our very own Pickering Manor Apartment resident Ethel Hibbs was featured in an article in the Sunday June 14th edition of The Advance of Bucks County. Ethel has written and published a book entitled "Lads and Lassies in Service," which documents letters written by 66 WWII service members who were members of the Newtown United Methodist Church and penned letters home during the war. One of those servicemen, Willet Hibbs, who was drafted at age 18 as a senior in high school, became her husband. Ethel says, "I wrote this book in order to preserve the very precious messages written home to Newtown families. These notes tell us about the service folks, their environment and how deeply they loved and anticipated coming home." |
