Goodbye

And when [Paul] had said these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. And there was much weeping on the part of all; they embraced Paul and kissed him, being sorrowful most of all because of the word he had spoken, that they would not see his face again. And they accompanied him to the ship. (Acts 20:36-38 ESV)

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Saying goodbye is hard. You're at a party, enjoying the food and drink, the conversations, watching the big game on TV...and then it's time to go. Many hugs, lingering conversations, but eventually you get in the car and leave.

Saying goodbye is hard. The family reunion is winding down. So many activities, so many good memories: whitewater rafting, picnics, horseshoes, bad jokes...But it's time to pack up your stuff, load up the van, and hit the road. Some you may see again...some not.

Saying goodbye is hard. The doctors have done all they can do. The tubes are being taken out, the machines are being shut off, the I.V. lines are being removed...and you're just sitting there, holding your loved one's hand, waiting for the doctor to make their final declaration. Years of living your lives together, decades of marriage, kids, grandkids, great-grandkids...it will all be over soon.

Saying goodbye is hard...especially if you are not going to see the one you're saying goodbye to again.

When Paul said goodbye to the elders at the church in Ephesus, it was hard for everyone involved. All of them knew that they would never see each other again. The incredible and challenging ministry the Lord had set aside for Paul was coming to a close. He was going to go back to Jerusalem and his fellow Jews that he had once shared so much in common with were going to have enough of him and turn him over. It filled Paul and the Elders with grief. They had so many good memories together: preaching, teaching, discipling, serving, seeking and saving the lost...the Holy Spirit had done incredible things in Ephesus and beyond. And these things would continue throughout history...but Paul's time had come to an end. There were hugs, tears, prayers, words of encouragement and admonition...and then Paul got on a ship and left. It was hard.

Voter's Meeting: July 30th

July 30th 11:45 am After 10:30 am Service

At our Second Quarter Voter's meeting we will be voting on our Officers & Board Members for the 2017-2018 Year. We encourage members to attend to hear about the Life of Summit of Peace and participate in the election of the Officers and Board Members.
Save the Date: Summit Structure Consultation

Sept 30th 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

If you sit on one of our church boards, have been to a voters' meeting lately, or attended the post Best Practices presentation, then you have no doubt heard me babbling on about governance and our church.  In particular you may have heard me talking about policy governance vs. traditional governance, and how a change may be necessitated by our growth to ensure that Summit of Peace can stay responsive to both its membership and community.

If that all just sounds like so much Greek to you, or if you just want to learn more, please go ahead and block off Saturday, September 30th from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on your calendars now.  That day we will have an expert on Lutheran church governance presenting and answering your questions about the whats, whens, hows and whys of policy governance.  Whether or not to move forward with a change in governance structure will be on the agenda at the following voters' meeting, so I encourage you all to attend, ask questions and provide feedback.

I know that's a large time commitment but I think it's an important topic and we're giving you lots of advance notice.  Oh, and did I mention we'll feed you?

in His peace,
-Dirk
President, Summit of Peace
August Sermon Series: Jesus is ____________

For many years, the people of Israel waited for their Messiah, and waited and waited.  By the time he did arrive, their expectations had so captivated them they most did not recognize Him for who He was.  In his gospel, Matthew strives to show his people that Jesus was not only the Messiah they had hoped for, but also so much more.  Is it possible He is more than you expected as well?

Beginning August 6th, join us as we explore all Jesus is.
One Service: August 13th

While the campers are off in Buena Vista, Summit of Peace will only have one traditional service on August 13th at 9 am so mark your calendars accordingly.
August 13: Left Behind Breakfast

Left Behind Breakfast will be on August 13th after the 9 am service (approximately around 10 am).

The Great Deceiver: August Adult Bible Study

Beginning August 6th in the Gathering Grounds Fellowship Hall join us for the next
Summer Blockbuster Bible study: The Great Deceiver. It should come as no surprise that an adversary fit to be called the "god of this world" and the "power of darkness" is a force to be reckoned with. And so he is. In The Great Deceiver explore a being so diabolical he will stop at nothing to separate us from God.

Hosted by Pastor Michael Newman (Death ... Then What?), this four-session Men's NetWork Bible study examines the most perverse character in Scripture: Satan. "Beast," "accuser" and "evil one," this "roaring lion" as the apostle Peter calls him, is adept at changing his appearance and cunning in his deceit. Popular culture may portray the devil as a cartoon character in a red jumpsuit, as needing our sympathy, or has having gone down to Georgia, but those characterizations only muddy the waters.

When it comes to Satan it's a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners approach. Twisting and distorting God's divine imperative to Adam and Eve early in the book of Genesis (to our complete despair), he's been wreaking havoc and maligning mankind ever since. Centuries later, going toe to toe with Jesus in the wilderness, he must have sensed, however, things were not going to end well for him. By the very cross that took Jesus' life, God conquered Satan and sealed our redemption over sin, death and the devil by raising His Son from the dead, promising newness of life to all who believe in the saving Name of Jesus.

Though defeated with his end certain, Satan is still on the prowl. The Great Deceiver from the Men's NetWork-spend some time getting to know him ... from the Bible's point of view.

Food For Hope

This summer Food For Hope partnered with EqualHeart to provide daily meals for children in low income apartments in the Thornton area.  We provided meals for the weekends while EqualHeart provided lunches during the week. There have been many children coming on Fridays to pick up their food bags. They have said how much receiving the food means to them,  how much they appreciate the food and that they have fun visiting with the volunteers. This has been such a successful venture for us this summer that we will be working on expanding this program next year.

We have two remaining distribution dates which are both Fridays - August 4th and August 11th.  You can volunteer to help with the food distribution by going to our website:    http://foodforhope.net  and sign up.

We will be having some exciting events coming up in the Fall to help support Food For Hope. One will be partnering with local businesses to sponsor a Food For Hope team for the FallFest Races in Westminster on September 23rd.  Another activity will be a "Pajamas & Pancakes" fundraiser which will be on a Saturday morning. The date and times for these events will be available later this month.

The first bag packing for this coming school year will be on Monday, September 11th.

You can help us get started this year through monetary donations, volunteering or by donating Canned Fruit (light syrup) or Canned Vegetables (low or no sodium) and place them in the bin in the Fellowship Hall.

We thank you for your support and prayers.
