Mosquito Control that is safe and effective.

  • Cedar
Cedar oil has been shown to repel mosquitos and other insects by interfering with their ability to detect prey. It does this by overloading their senses, much like taking a whiff of ammonia.
Spread CedarCide granules around outdoor living areas every week or so.  The granules are great for camping and picnics.

  • Citronella
Citronella oil extracted from the lemon grass plant has been in popular use since the late 1940's.  It has demonstrated outstanding mosquito repellent effects.

  • Garlic
Garlic has been used as a medicine and insect repellent for thousands of years.  Garlic has been shown to have larvicidal properties as well.
Apply the spray to areas that harbor mosquitos during the day including shrubs, tree trunks, under the eaves of houses, stands of ivy, ground covers, and lawns.  The major side effect for humans is a craving for Italian food or pizza!

 From our Landscape Architect

"Preventing the Spread of Plant Disease"  by Janielle Guzinski

Disease is a horrible word.  As a landscaper and gardening enthusiast, it evokes images of yellowing leaves, rotting roots, spongy bark, mass defoliation, tree after tree dying, rows of dead palm tree trunks, and so many more horrid images.  However, there can be ways to treat disease and to stop its spread.

Certain diseases that occur on Galveston can be prevented by disinfecting pruning tools.  Notable examples of this are leaf scorch on Oleanders and fusarium wilt in Canary Island Dates.  Both of these diseases can be spread by using the same tool on an infected plant as on an uninfected plant.  So, if you have an oleander that you think might have scorch, disinfect your pruning shears or loppers with bleach or denatured alcohol before you use them on another plant.  This simple step can stop the spread of disease.

It is also important to keep infected plants from spreading the disease.  Chipping branches and leaves that are infected and using them as mulch may spread the disease to other susceptible plants around your property or tho the property of others who use the mulch.  Please consider where the final destination of your yard waste is if you believe there is a contagious plant disease on your property.

In the unfortunate case where prevention failed and a disease has spread to your plants, there are often treatments.  Treating for plant diseases means identifying which disease your plant has and using an appropriate treatment method.  You can bring in a sample of the afflicted plant to the nursery to see if our staff can diagnose it.  If the nursery staff cannot diagnose your plant, the Galveston County Extension Office (4102-B Main Street [FM 519], LaMarque, TX,  281-534-3413) has the laboratory capability to do actual tests and give a definitive answer.  Many plant diseases are fungal and using a fungicide can be an effective treatment.  Sometimes the recommended treatment is to remove the infected part of the plant, making sure to dispose of it properly.  There may be cases where it is necessary to remove an entire plant, but we never want it to come to that.

Let's have a disease free summer with all of our lovely plants in yards across Galveston Island.
