TIMELY TIPS FOR AUGUST FROM
TEXAS GARDENER  July/August 2017 Vol. XXXVI No.5
1.   Install drip irrigation wherever you can to save on water, reduce plant diseases and make watering easy.  An automatic system can be set up to apply the right amount when and where you want it.
2.  Harvest rainwater.  Did you know that every time it rains an inch you can capture 600 gallons of rainwater per 1,000 sq ft of building area?
3.  Late summer is a good time to do a landscape walk-through early one morning.  Note where the lawn is going well and where it is struggling.
Check out your shrubs, perennials and annual flower beds to see where you might want to make changes.  Fall planting season is just around the corner, so start to make plans now for a fall renovation.

From Our
Landscape Architect:
"
The Experiential Landscape
"
by Janielle Guzinski

We traditionally understand the landscapes around us visually and experientially.  The visual is easy to explain;  you walk up to your house and glance at the garden around you or you stare at a sunset over the wetlands.  These are the views of the landscape from a window or as a backdrop to your life.  These snapshots of the world around us are very important to our understanding, but they are also only a very small connection to our surroundings.

The experiential landscape is a bit more involved.  It is when the landscape creates an experience, something that captures you.  For example, exploring a trail with your best friend or playing hide-and-seek with a child in the bushes.  This is about generating experiences and interactions with the world around us.  It is a much more involved and integrated understanding of landscape.    And because no two experiences are alike, a landscape that lends itself to experiential understanding is one we can repeat.

Several years ago I was honored to learn the basics of watercolor landscape sketches.  This changed how I enjoy the world around me.  I now try to get a few done every time I visit a new place or see something extraordinary in Galveston.  Now a painting is still a visual understanding, but the experience of creating the painting out in the sun, with the smell of the seaweed, with winds trying to blow away my papers, gives me a deeper appreciation for what I am representing with paint and water.

I would like to challenge everyone to explore how they understand the landscape around them.   Look for new ways to connect, new things to see, to experience.

They had a Galveston weekend last February.
