Are you using the right needle for the job? With so many well made needles available now, be sure to select the right material and shape for the yarn you are using.
For example, wood needles are considered to have more "grip", use these when you are using a slippery yarn. Metal needles are wonderful with most wool, especially plied wools. Also consider the points. Are you knitting with lace weight or single ply yarn ? Pointier tips are excellent for the job.
