In July we had 14 new dogs. All of them came from Mobile, AL.  9 entered TGIE and 5 went straight into foster care.   July also so an amazing 22 adoptions!

This makes our year to date totals 92 arrivals, 13 hauled for other groups, and 81 adoptions.
Michigan City Farmer's Market

This summer American Greyhound has been attending the Michigan City Farmers Market. From the first day of us attending this event we have been welcomed with open arms, and every time we are there, people come out just to visit with the greyhounds. It has been so heart-warming to meet such wonderful people, each and every Saturday that we are there and we now look forward to the next event.

American Greyhound will be in Michigan City at the corner of Washington St and 8th on August 6th, September 3rd and every Saturday in October (weather permitting). Come on out and visit us, bring a pet or have a seat and hug a hound... you will not be the only one. Looking forward to seeing you soon!
TGIE and American Greyhound

2016 marks the 7th year American Greyhound has been involved with a program at the prison facility in Coldwater, Michigan (we began our affiliation there with SCAL, -Second Chance at Life-, and when that folded up in 2011, we began our association with TGIE, -The Prison Greyhound Experience). If you've ever read our newsletter, you know our feelings on what it means to the hounds, to the men who care for and train them, and for us as an organization. There is simply no downside to our association with this operation. Counting both programs, American Greyhound has had over 265 dogs graduate these programs and move on to a life as a family pet.

Again at this year's annual picnic, we'd like to ask you to bring with you a donation of dog treats for donation to this wonderful program. The donation of treats American Greyhound, and YOU have made to TGIE over the years has had a tremendous impact on the success of the program (we all know how food-driven our pups can be, and having adequate treats to train the dogs makes a world of difference to the success of the handlers in training our dogs).

Each ten week session, TGIE trains 20 retired racing greyhounds who have come north from the track in Mobile, Alabama. Of those 20 dogs that enter the program, 9 are American Greyhound dogs. The remaining 11 dogs are split between Greythounds of Eastern Michigan (GEM), and Allies for Greyhounds of Western Michigan. Besides the basic obedience training that each dog receives, all dogs receive their AKC Good Citizenship award as well. And, more importantly, is the impact those 20 dogs make on the 40 men whose lives they change every 10 weeks.

Thank you for your continued support of TGIE, and your continued support of our association with TGIE. And, please join us in supporting them by donating treats at the picnic again this year.
Welcome to the Sunshine State
S o far, 2016 has been a wonderful year for greyhounds. We had the record breaking haul in May that brought over 20 hounds home to Northwest Indiana. We have no plans on letting that momentum fade in August! We are planning a trip to Florida to be there for more hounds that need us. The weekend of August 12, our volunteers will be making the long trip. If you've contemplated fostering and think now is the time to welcome a greyhound into your home, shoot me a text, email, or give me a call.

Picnic 2016
This year marks our 13th year hosting an annual picnic. And, each year they have turned out to be a very memorable event. The 2016 event promises to be equally memorable. The event will be returning on September 10th from noon until 5:00 PM to Loree and Mike McKinney's house at 891 Jane Avenue in Chesterton, Indiana 46307, for the first time since 2013.

American Greyhound will again be providing the hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken. We'll need attendees whose last name begins with the letters A-L to bring a side dish and those whose last name begins with the letters M-Z to bring a dessert.

Also, we'd like to ask each attendee to bring along some treats which we will donate to TGIE, our prison training program (take a look at the earlier article in this month's newsletter about the TGIE program and what a wonderful impact it makes on our hounds and the men who care for and train them). Every year for the last four years we've asked for these donations and you have come through with a trailer load of treats to help this wonderful program. And, every year when we deliver the treats you have donated, we receive heartfelt thanks from the program. And, having seen how this program affects not only our hounds, but also the men care for and train our hounds, I can attest to what a wonderful  impact your help makes with the program.

There will be a large yard for your hound to run (all dogs entering the yard will need to be muzzled for safety, if you have no muzzle, there will be muzzles available for purchase at the picnic).

We'll have the American Greyhound store on site for purchase of t-shirts, as well as a number of other vendors (we'll update you as the picnic draws closer on a lineup of vendors onsite). There will be the usual contests (again, we'll keep you appraised of the different contests we have planned). There will be 50/50 raffles going on most of the day. And, of course, we'll have our annual silent auction taking place (if you have items you'd like to donate, please contact Nicole Roth at [email protected] or (708)828-6810).

Lorre McKinney, our picnic chairperson, can still use some volunteers to help pull this eventtogether. If you can help Loree and her crew with setting up, running or cleaning up the picnic, pleasegive her a ring at (219-241-5051 or drop her an email at [email protected]. Your help can really helpmake the picnic another one to remember.

A Freezin' Good Reason for People with Warm Hearts to Support American Greyhound
Sign up for the 2017 American Greyhound Polar Plunge and you too can be a hero to a
hound!

As we're gathering around to watch the XXXI Summer Games, I'm reminded I've never
quite harnessed my true athletic abilities. But there is one event I excel at-the Polar
Plunge! In fact anyone can bring home the gold medal at this event, you don't need to
be fast or slow, tall or short or even have any sort of endurance. All you really need to
participate in this event, is a warm heart. A heart warm enough to endure a few
seconds of cold so that you can help some unwanted greyhounds find their way to their
forever homes.

If you want to bring home the gold for a greyhound, click here to sign up to plunge and
the rest of the process is so easy you're sure to get that gold medal! As always, our
plunge will take place in the morning on January 1, 2017 at North Avenue Beach in
Chicago, IL. After we finish our main event, we'll head over to the Old Town Ale House
to make some memories and celebrate!

If all of that that hasn't convinced you, this year is our tenth anniversary and our prizes
this year will be better than ever! You definitely won't want to miss out!

If you have any questions at all, please give me a call at (219) 263-8742 or send me an
email at [email protected].

Happy Plunging!

Fund Raising for American Greyhound
Thanks to a random encounter with some folks from the Humane society of the Calumet area, American Greyhound has been offered an opportunity to participate in an exciting event occurring at a number of Strack and VanTil grocery stores in the Northwest Indiana area. During the weekend of August 19-21, American Greyhound will be participating in a tag day event at the Strack and VanTil located at 2168 West US Highway 30, Valparaiso, Indiana 46383.

To take full advantage of this opportunity, we need your help! We need people who can come out, with their hounds (or we can provide you a dog for you to bring out) and staff our table at the store. We'll be soliciting donations, providing information about retired racers as pets. We need to have people in front of the store from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM each day. Currently, our greatest need is on Friday, August 19th , but we can use your help on all three days.

Also, as Strack and VanTil is hosting and actively promoting this event, they will be offering for sale to shoppers, pre-bagged items which, when purchased will be donated to the rescue organizations participating for use in their efforts to make life better for companion animals who need a break.

As we said, this is a terrific opportunity to not only raise funds for our operation, but to spread the word about greyhounds as pets. If you can help us make the most of this event or have any questions, contact Jeff Coggins at [email protected] or at (219)771-0892.
