ONE FAMILY 200 YEARS 7 GENERATIONS
THE CALVERLEY - RAMPEN FAMILY LEGACY
August 2 - September 8
Opening Exhibition Tea Party
Sunday, August 4th, 2-5
Sybil Rampen, whose family arrived in Oakville in 1912, has created an extraordinary collection of paintings and art from her family that extends over 200 years and 7 generations.
Included in the collection is the art of Anthony Salvin, b.1799, an architect and painter who is known for restoration work in Windsor Castle, Durham Cathedral and the Tower of London.
Also on display works of Amice Calverley, an Egyptologist. Through the funding of John D. Rockefeller Jr. who"was deeply inspired by the beauty of the painted reliefs of Seti I, Abydos and the excellence in producing them" had a desire to see as many plates as possible produced. The lavish production that evolved from her artistic efforts was a joint Egypt Exploration Society and Oriental Institute project.
The family art has survived wars and depletion. It has voyaged from countless countries to find its way home to Oakville and the Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre.
Continuing in modern day and the most recent generation of artists in the Calverley - Rampen legacy will be the inclusion of the art of Dick Rampen, Professor at OCAD.

WHAT'S NEW AT JCHAC
JOSHUA CREEK GABEZO
The pictures say it all. The Joshua Creek gazebo is as stunning from the inside as it is from the outside. Find your way to this oasis on the property with vista views of the meadow, watch the activity in the bee hives and just beyond the parking area the orchard is bearing its bounty. This nostalgic addition is a place for self reflection, capturing a family picture or playing an instrument with nature your audience.
Gratitude to James, Mathew and Ryan for the creative design and build !
DOCUMENTARY
It is a great privilege for us, Fernanda Sierra and Esteban Powell, as high school co-op students to have the opportunity to make a documentary feature at Joshua Creek. The goal of the documentary (as initially intended by Sybil Rampen) is to show audiences the impact art can have on the differently-abled. It is important to recognize the works and processes of these artists. Joshua Creek is the perfect co-operative education placement, the natural scenery and vibe enhances the feeling of the project. We are more than happy to be part of this community.
FUTURE GALLERY EXHIBITIONS
We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists. We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.
OTHER IMPORTANT NEWS AND UPDATES
A NOTE FROM THE ORGANIC GARDEN
The Evolving Families organic garden plot is specializing in tomatoes and kale. Once the crop is harvested then onto market selling kale chips and tomato sauces to support community initiatives. In July, 5 rows were seeded the day before a significant amount of rain hit the GTA resulting in the loss of more than half of the planted crop.
In the true spirit of produce gardening Evolving Families is showing its determination to succeed in its first year. Currently they are preparing the land and budding plants under a home gazebo as a means to get a healthy beginning before the next planting.
