Downtown Healdsburg
Familiarization Tours for Employees
By Wine Country Walking Tours and the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce

Who:For businesses and organizations operating in Healdsburg and their employees.

Why:One way to impress visitors and locals alike with our friendly hometown spirit is to help them find what they're looking for by knowing where things are in downtown Healdsburg. Plus, the more downtown businesses know about one another, the more we can help each other create a warm and welcoming experience for our customers.

Many downtown employees don't live in Healdsburg, and might not be able to tell customers how to find the nearest drug store or flower shop, or where the police station or post office is located. This tour gives you and your employees the opportunity to learn more about Healdsburg, and to connect with its business community.

When:9 to 10:30 a.m. every third Tuesday of the month on Aug. 23, Sept. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 22, and Dec. 20.

Where:Tours begin with a brief history presentation at the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce, followed by a walking tour of downtown Healdsburg.

How:This tour is a collaborative effort between the Healdsburg Chamber of Commerce and Wine Country Walking Tours.

Reservations are required 24 hours in advance. (Tour size is limited)
For reservations: call 707.758.4725
What:Each session covers the history of Healdsburg, current information about the town, and a walking tour to meet a few of the local proprietors and get familiar with your neighbors. Let us know if you have a particular topic you would like us to discuss or a specific establishment for us to visit.

Each attendee will receive a Healdsburg directory, map, current events calendar, and various goodies along the tour route. The Healdsburg Familiarization Tour will visit art galleries, retail stores, restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, tasting rooms, breweries, cider houses, grocery stores, drug stores, the post office, etc.

Cost:$15 per person for Chamber members and their employees, and $20 per person for non-members.

What To Bring:Your questions!

Come, walk the streets with us and

0% Loans Help LOCAL 4-H & FFA Students Buy, Show, Sell at County Fairs

The Sonoma County Fair is underway, and many agriculture students are showing and selling the animals they raised. It can be costly to buy, shelter, feed and provide health care for, say, a pig. But it's also a great learning experience for students to plan, budget, learn responsibility and, ultimately, to make a profit.

To help, Community First, your favorite LOCAL not-for-profit financial cooperative, has provided zero-interest, zero-fee loans to LOCAL AG students who are part of 4-H or Future Farmers of America. For most, loans were set up in January through March. Students could borrow from $100 to $2,500. This season, Community First provided $207,560 to 117 local AG students, an average of $1,774 per student.

"Our goal is to offer a real-world lesson in economics and budget planning, as well as provide a way for students to earn some serious money," said Rebecca Nystrom-Brito, Member Development Specialist at Community First, and manager of the program. "We work with young future farmers and 4-H'ers -- some as young as 10 -- to understand their goals, create a business plan, and fine-tune their realistic costs," she added. Each student is equipped with a debit card to purchase their animal and supplies, plus online banking to track their expenses. Students keep records and receipts.

At fair time the students sell their animals. "Most students walk away with an average profit between $1,000 and $2,000," said Nystrom-Brito. "When they do that for a few years, students find themselves with a really good start to their college fund," she added.

Once the loan is paid back (not a single loan was late or in default last year), students start earning a credit score. A good credit score can help them get the best rate whenever they eventually need a credit card or car, and can even help them land they job they want.

Community First, the former Sonoma County Schools Credit Union, has a long history of helping local schools. The financial cooperative provides local schools with in-class financial literacy presentations. For 22 years it has produced and distributed an over-size educator calendar to all classrooms in Sonoma County. It also offers a special loan program for would-be teachers enrolled in the Sonoma County Office of Education's "Be a Teacher" program.
