Pax Christi, the Dominican Sisters of Houston, Maryknoll Brothers and Fathers, and the Houston Peace and Justice Peace Club partner with the Rothko Chapel to commemorate the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagaski.  A procession, titled the "March of the Dead," starts at the Chapel's reflecting pool and proceeds throughout the neighborhood, ending back on the plaza. A vigil follows the procession, including a prayer for the souls of the dead and the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Sikh Meditation with Satmitar Khalsa

Native Houstonian Satmitar Khalsa leads participants in a meditation, titled "Experiencing our Light," which focuses awareness on the vibration of sound through simple chanting.  This practice allows participants the opportunity to refresh their consciousness with every breath.  Khalsa is a specialist in education, spirituality, and ethics, in addition to being a Kundalini Yoga teacher.

El Rectorado del Son is a group of talented Houstonians who perform traditional Son Cubano, a style of music that originated in Cuba and gained worldwide popularity in the 1930s.  Free beer provided by St. Arnold Brewing Company and other goodies provided by Whole Foods, plus Texas Blizzard Shave Ice is on site!

I Have a Dream Speech

To honor the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s historic I Have a Dream Speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the Rothko Chapel plays the speech at dedicated times throughout the day.  
  
Preserving Mayan Legacies in Ritual and Ceremony

Renowned Mayan elder and healer Tata Apolinario Chile Pixt�n conducts a public ceremony on the Rothko Chapel plaza for healing and blessing during the current Mayan transition period.  The ceremony ends with a telling of the Mayan calendar prophecy, and following the ceremony is a talk at noon at Project Row Houses. Tata Apolinario Chile Pixt�n belongs to the Community Kaqchikel Mayab' of Guatemala. As a healer, he is a Naturopathic Practitioner with specialties in herbal medicine, energy medicine, ethno-botany, and ethno-therapy. He is a keeper of the Mayan Calendar and also the Lead Coordinator of the Grand Confederation of Main Ajq'ijab Ajq�ijab�.

Band of Sisters tells the story of Catholic nuns and their work for social justice after Vatican II of the 1960s. For Catholics who wonder what became of the nuns they knew in habits and convents many years ago, for activists who may feel profoundly discouraged given the problems of today's world, for women seeking equality in their church, and for people of all faiths yearning for an inclusive and contemplative spirituality, Band of Sisters challenges audiences to ask what really matters in life, and how to change the world. All events are free unless otherwise indicated. Seating for inside events is first-come, first- served. RSVP to secure preferential seating up to 15 minutes prior to the start of the program.  At evening events, doors open 30 minutes prior to start time.

 

Parking is available along the street or in the St. Thomas Parking Garage on the corner of West Alabama and Graustark for $2.00 (cash only).
