August Advocate of the Month
Rich Smith

Our August Advocate of the Month, Rich Smith, was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho and has lived in Colorado since 1998. Rich worked in the tech industry for IBM for 14 years and now owns a classic car restoration business.  Rich wanted to help his community, and he found that CASA was the perfect opportunity for him to do that. Rich has been a CASA Volunteer Advocate since April 2017, and though he's only been an Advocate for a short time, he has made a huge impact on the families he works with.
In Rich's first CASA case, he represents an infant who was subjected to substance abuse since birth and subsequently placed in an unstable living arrangement.

Ted Shipman, Advisory Board Member and major supporter of CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties, passed away on Wednesday, July 5, 2017. Ted has been involved with CASA for over 17 years, when the organization first began in 2000. He made a lasting impact on our community and organization by personally sponsoring and impacting the lives of nearly 160 abused and neglected children. Additionally, Ted helped develop the Peer Coordinator model that allows us to serve more children without increasing operational costs. W e will forever cherish the memory and generosity of a man whose kindness knows no bounds.

A Remembrance Celebration was held for Ted on July 25, 2017 in Denver. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties, 1100 Judicial Center Drive, Brighton, CO 80601 or by clicking HERE. Ted's full obituary can be read HERE.

September Advocate of the Month
Lillian Archuleta

Our CASA Volunteer Advocates really care about the well-being of children. They are there when other adults say they will be but fall short. They let the courts know what the children on their cases are thinking and feeling. They listen to children express what they want when most other adults make decisions without talking to the children. Our CASA Volunteer Advocates are committed to making sure that the children they serve have their needs met no matter their race, language, or status.
Our September Advocate of the Month demonstrates this commitment especially well. READ MORE
National CASA & Colorado CASA

From its beginning in 1977 when Seattle Judge David Soukup called on  community volunteers to advocate for the children involved in abuse  and neglect court cases, the CASA program has grown into a national network of programs.  CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties is one of  nearly 1,000 local programs across the country that are members of the National CASA Association.  National CASA sets program standards, provides technical assistance, and promotes CASA volunteer advocacy in support of local programs.
Click HERE to learn more about National CASA.

In Colorado, CASA Programs are set up by Judicial District and are authorized by state statute. The duties and responsibilities of CASA volunteers are outlined in Colorado state statute C.R.S.§19-1-201 et seq. of the Colorado Children's Code.  The law explicitly recognizes that "the work of community volunteers has been proven to be effective in addressing the needs of children. Partnerships between guardians ad litem and community volunteers can enhance the quality of representation for children." CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties was established in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to serve the 17th Judicial District and to recruit, train, and support CASA volunteers in their work with abused and neglected children.

There are 16 CASA programs in Colorado, serving 16 of the 22 Judicial Districts. Colorado CASA is the supporting agency for all 16 programs, coordinating and implementing statewide goals in four key areas: data collection and reporting, legislation, marketing, and fundraising.

"Stress Can Affect A Child in a Major Way"
By: Lindsey Tanner

"A quiet, unsmiling little girl with big brown eyes crawls inside a carpeted cubicle, hugs a stuffed teddy bear tight, and turns her head away from the noisy classroom.
The safe spaces, quiet times and breathing exercises for her and the other preschoolers at the Verner Center for Early Learning are designed to help kids cope with intense stress so they can learn. But experts hope there's an even bigger benefit - protecting young bodies and brains from stress so persistent that it becomes toxic.
It's no secret that growing up in tough circumstances can be hard on kids and lead to behavior and learning problems. But researchers are discovering something different. Many believe that ongoing stress during early childhood - from grinding poverty, neglect, parents' substance abuse and other adversity - can smolder beneath the skin, harming kids' brains and other body systems." Major Donor Highlight
17th  Judicial District Victims Assistance & Law Enforcement Program

CASA of Adams & Broomfield Counties is honored to have the 17th Judicial District Victims Assistance and Law Enforcement (VALE) Program as a "Benefactor" supporter.  CASA Benefactors are individuals, businesses, and grantors that provide support for abused and neglected children at the $50,000 or more level.

The 17th Judicial District VALE Program has consistently supported CASA through its grants program, providing a grant in the amount of $58,767 in 2017.  The VALE Program was created in 1984, by Colorado state law, to provide support to crime victims and law enforcement agencies in each Colorado Judicial District. Window Covering Safety Council Partnership

CASA has teamed up with the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC) and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to urge parents and caregivers to check their window coverings. Exposed or dangling cords can pose a strangulation hazard to infants and young children, and it's recommended to retrofit or replace them with today's safer products.

The partnership stems from a deep-rooted commitment to ensure that ALL children are safe in their homes. Since CASA Volunteer Advocates visit the homes and foster homes of children they work with, the partnership is a perfect fit. All CASA Volunteer Advocates are trained to share window covering safety information with the parents, foster parents, and caregivers they come into contact with.

To learn more about window-cord safety, or to order free retrofit kits, go to the Window Covering Safety Council's website HERE.
