Message from the Assistant Director,
Alumni Development

Dear LBCC Alumni Community,

Welcome back!  It is that time of year and we are well on our way to the start of another fabulous semester at Long Beach City College.  On Saturday, we will host our first home football game of the season against Grossmont and encourage all alumni to attend.  Part of your paid membership includes 50% off all non-championship home athletic events.  Stop by the bookstore and show your membership card to purchase your spirit wear for a 10% discount.

The Foundation and Hall of Fame committee have been hard at work preparing for the 2018 LBCC Hall of Fame Banquet, which I believe is going to be one of the best.  We are so thrilled to induct Dee Andrews, Stephen Bowles, John Fylpaa, and Janeen Steel as our newest Hall of Fame honorees at The Grand on October 17th.  Please consider joining us for a great evening starting with cocktails at 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

Go Vikings!

Jennifer Bourgeois
Please join us as we celebrate this year's Alumni Hall of Fame Honorees. It will be a night to remember as we celebrate the accomplishments of Viking Alumni Dee Andrews, Stephen Bowles, John Fylpaa, and Janeen Steel at The Grand on Wednesday, October 17th.

Stop by our table and say "hi" at the grand openings of LBCC's Welcome Centers! We'll be out in front of the PCC's center between 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5th just north of the AA Building and in front of the LAC's center between 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th just south of Building A.
Please join us and support our Vikings football team as they take on the Renegade Knights of Bakersfield College in a rematch of the 2017 Patriot Bowl. Long Beach and Bakersfield have become recent rivals, as we've faced off (and won!) in Bowl Games the past two seasons, so it's sure to be an exciting game!

Tickets are available in person at the stadium, and are $10 for General Admission, $5 for High School or College Students with ID and Seniors, and $3 for Kids 12 and Under.
As the campus gears up for its 91st year, we thought we'd take a look back at how we celebrated its 90th.  At the 90th Anniversary Gala, more than 300 supporters of the college gathered to celebrate the past 90 years and look to the future.  The evening kicked off with a red carpet cocktail hour and silent auction, followed by a dinner program honoring one of LBCC's most notable alumna, Dr. Beverly O'Neill, LBCC Superintendent-President Emerita and former Mayor of Long Beach.  Hosted on the Liberal Arts Campus, the Gala transformed the Central Quad into the Roaring 20s, when Long Beach City College first opened its doors. The generosity and commitment to excellence that have long been cornerstones of LBCC were on display, as the Gala raised more than $200,000, with $50,000 going to the Long Beach College Promise program that provides a tuition-free first year for graduates of Long Beach Unified's high schools.  The event was hosted by The LBCC Foundation with Title Sponsor Don Temple Family Charitable Foundation and Don Temple Storage and sponsors Cordoba Corporation, LBS Financial Credit Union, F&M Bank, Port of Long Beach, Jerry and Jean Green, and P2S.
Historical Vikings!

Col. Charles H. Pierce, Viking alumnus and decorated pilot, learned to fly at LBCC in the late 1930s as part of the Civilian Pilot Training Program unveiled by President Roosevelt in the years leading up to World War II. The program's aim was to train 20,000 college students as pilots each year in preparation for the coming war.

Our very own Charles H. Pierce was the first member of the Junior College Flight Training Program to be given his private flier's license. After earning his wings, Col. Pierce established his own flight training schools to ready pilots for the war effort, and in 1945 he became the Commander of the Persian Gulf Command where he was the chief pilot for the Kings of Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He would go on to also serve as the Commander of the Pilot Training Program at Webb AFB in Texas, Base Commander of both Kadena AFB on Okinawa and Laredo AFB in Texas, and was the Commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service.

After retiring from the military, he was Chief Pilot and FAA Examiner at several airports back in his native Southern California.

To tell us about a former Viking you'd like us to highlight in future newsletters, please email [email protected] and I will take a look!
