Serving Indiana

What are the risk factors for heart disease, and how can I minimize my risk?

An Invitation for Participation in our Strategic Planning Process

Dear Friend,

The Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter (LFA-IN) Board and its Staff are firm in its commitment to educate and serve the needs of lupus patients of all ages, their family members and the public. Throughout the year our office provides information and referral, educational seminars and workshops, advocacy opportunities, statewide support groups and also manages several critical fundraising events. To advance on our path, we must focus on the sustainability of the chapter's organizational life-cycle, including board and staff development. Additionally, we must increase hiring to enhance program development and evaluation, grow and retain an active volunteer base, diversify our revenue sources and build a reliable development plan, while increasing funding to support programs and research.

One plan. Many perspectives.

As we embark on the crafting of our 2016-19 Strategic Plan we wish to stress that it will be mission-led and values-based.  Dalton-Cole & Associates will be conducting electronic surveys and scheduling telephonic focus groups over the next three months to ensure that our final product reflects the many voices of our community.

Comprehensive. Integrated. Evolving over Time.

The finished plan will be the driver for our work ahead and will be designed to be responsive to changes within our organization and within our patient advocacy landscape. The plan will include objectives which are quantifiable measures we can use to evaluate the success of our goals and the various strategies we will employ to achieve these measures.

Please provide your input and perspective by participating in the surveys and focus groups. I look forward to these conversations and learning your insights on the important questions we face to best mobilize our resources and realize our aspirations.

Sincerely ,

Morgan E. McGill

Ask the Experts: Lupus Diagnosis

"Ask the Experts" is a series of educational talks and presentations on a variety of topics designed to provide you with important information about living with lupus. This month, Dr. Donald Thomas, author of The Lupus Encyclopedia, answered your questions about the diagnosis of lupus. There are many challenges to reaching a lupus diagnosis. Lupus is known as "the great imitator" because its symptoms mimic many other illnesses. Lupus symptoms can be unclear, can come and go, and can change over time.

Support Groups

UPDATE: The support group that previously met in Lafayette will now meet at the Otterbein Public Library, 23 E. 1st St., on the first Wed. of the month from 5:30-6:30 pm.

What to expect when you attend our lupus support group meetings...A warm and caring environment where people with lupus, their family members, caregivers, and loved ones spend time with others impacted by this complicated disease. Sharing experiences, methods of coping, and insights into living with lupus helps members develop coping strategies to reduce the stress that often accompanies living with a chronic illness. We hope you'll attend a support group meeting soon.

Chloe T. Barlow: A Novel Approach to Love and Lupus

Attorney by day, romance novelist by night, Chloe T. Barlow found her inspiration to write after struggling with the realities of chronic illness. Though none of her characters have her disease, the emotional roller coaster brought on through years of misdiagnosis and learning to live with lupus make her books extremely personal. Read about Chloe's journey and how lupus helped her become the writer she is today.

Answer: People with lupus have two categories of risk factors for heart disease. The traditional risk factors that affect the general population apply to people with lupus and appear more frequently among them. But lupus itself raises additional risks of coronary artery disease, or blockage in the arteries. Controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol and making wise lifestyle choices like eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are important ways you can modify these risks. Always speak to your doctor before beginning an exercise program.   Learn more.
