November is American Diabetes Month
Are you at Risk?

We frequently talk about the risk factors of diabetes but we don't always talk about what diabetes actually is. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability & death in the U.S. If it's not controlled, diabetes can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease and other health problems.

The good news is small steps towards improving your overall lifestyle can make big difference and help prevent or reduce your risk for this disease! Make time for YOURSELF each day with a couple of short 10 minute walks. As district employees many of us have access to our campus's track!

A training developed BY educators FOR educators.

Breathe For Change offers the world's only 200 hour Wellness and Yoga Teacher Training specifically designed for Educators.

The training curriculum takes participants on a transformational experience. Through the training, participants become a Certified Yoga Teacher & receive a Breathe For Change Wellness Champion certification which qualifies them to lead wellness & social emotional learning programs for students, colleagues, and community members.

The next Austin training is scheduled to begin in January 2018 and scholarships are available for educators to assist with cost.

Eat Breakfast - By eating a light & healthy breakfast you can help control your appetite.

Swap out Ingredients - Instead of candied yams eat sweet potatoes. Instead of green bean casserole, have steamed fresh green beans.

Keep it Balanced - Resist the urge to overload on your favorite dish. Be sure to keep your plate ratio 1/2 vegetables, 1/4 protein, and 1/4 carbohydrates

Pitch In - Offer to bring a traditional Thanksgiving dish and healthify it!

Partake in a Physical Activity - Whether it's before or after you eat with your friends and family, do something active on Thanksgiving day. Take a group walk around the block. It's a great time to bond and make getting moving more fun!

Drink Water - Hydration is key to avoid overeating. Go easy on the empty calorie beverages such as alcohol, soda, and punch.

Focus on the Holiday - Thanksgiving is about appreciation for your friends and family. Make sure to emphasize spending quality time together outside of all the delicious food.

Enjoy - Savor your meal & practice mindfulness while you eat. Appreciate what it took to get your food to your plate & savor each bite.

The holidays are a great excuse to indulge a little so don't deprive yourself. Just be mindful of the choices you are making and stay active! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
