APS Annual Awards Ceremony

Come celebrate the year with us at our Annual Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 19, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Yarborough Branch Library – 2200 Hancock Dr, Austin.

Winners of the Annual Contests will be announced at this meeting and first place poems will be read aloud by the poets if they are in attendance.

It will be the final APS meeting of the year until fall, so don't miss out!
APS Saturday Critique Group

Join the next meeting of the APS Saturday Critique Group Saturday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m at the Old Quarry Branch Library, 7051 Village Center Dr., Austin.

Poetry Contests and Calls for Submissions

  • The Alabama State Poetry Society is accepting submissions for the annual John and Miriam Morris Memorial Chapbook Competition. The deadline is May 31. The winner receives $100 and 25 copies of their winning chapbook. Poems may be prevviously published if the poet retains all rights. Send 16 to 24 pages of poetry, and two title pages -- one with author identification and one without, along with a $15 reading fee payable to New Dawn Unlimited Inc. to: New Dawn Unlimited Inc., ASPS 2018 Morris Memorial Chapbook Competition, 1830 Marvel Road, Brierfield, AL 35035

Jeffrey Taylor had "Condemned" published on La Bloga, the world's longest-established Chicana Chicano, Latina Latino literary blog and "Language & Beauty" forthcoming in di-vêrsé-city, the Austin International Poetry Festival anthology. 

Janelle Curlin-Taylor has "Beauty" forthcoming in di-vêrsé-city.

Nancy Fierstien ’s poem, “What Am I to Make of This?” appears in the Spring 2018 issue of the True-badour literary newsletter published by Ernie Lee. Another poem, “I Want My Ouija Board Back,” is in the anthology released this month by the Austin International Poetry Festival.

Benjamin Nash had poems accepted in Huizache and VOLT. 

Kaye Voigt Abikhaled won 1st Place in Lone Stars Magazine #88 in "2017 Light of the Stars" contest for "A Poem Lost."

Anjela Villarreal Ratliff ’s poem “Dear español,” which was previously published in Australian Latino Press, will be performed by an actor from “Play On Words,” a collaborative literary performance group. The poem will be performed on April 11 at the Stritch Café in San Jose, California.

Brad Strahan recently had three poems accepted by the Wayne Literary Review.

We’ll be celebrating the 2017 release of Montreux Rotholtz’s poetry collection  Unmark , selected by Mary Szybist as the winner of the 2015 Burnside Review Press Book Award.

April 8, 1-3pm, Malvern Books 613 West 29th Street, Austin .  The Lion & The Pirate Unplugged.  In association with VSA Texas (The State Organization on Arts and Disability) and the Pen2Paper Creative Writing Contest (a project of the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities), we’re delighted to present an inclusive (mic-less) open mic for writers and musicians.

April 8, 4-6pm,   Malvern Books 613 West 29th Street, Austin .  Austin Writers Roulette.  Austin Writers Roulette is an uncensored, theme-inspired spoken word and storytelling event. It features a different monthly theme and line up of artists who perform their original written works such as poetry, essays, and spoken word. This month’s theme is "Drugs & Fantasies."

A woman in Northwest Austin is looking for a poet to mentor her 9-year-old daughter, who has shown a gift for writing poetry.
