Reading Power Celebrates 15 Years!
Author's Day Celebrates Young Writers!

In 1812, William Wordsworth wrote to his wife, "Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart." Because that's what writing is... the inhale and exhale of our thoughts and experiences.

In Reading Power, students write every day about what they have read. At the end of the year, students engage in Writer's Workshop - brainstorming ideas, selecting a topic, drafting, revising, editing, publishing and finally presenting their work. Some children write and illustrate books. Others write letters to family, friends, authors or even celebrities and often receive responses.

During the last week of Reading Power, each student gets a turn to share his or her writing at Author's Day. They sit in a special author's chair, read their pieces, and then receive compliments and questions from their peers and tutors.

"It's exciting to hear children model the language that they have been hearing from their tutors all year long as they encourage each other," says Lisa Bulzoni, Director of Programs. "When students are able to self-select what to read and write, their motivation is much higher."

Writing and speaking are two of the most sought after skills in the workplace. Being able to communicate in writing deepens understanding and allows all of us the opportunity to do some of our best thinking.

Donor Spotlight: BMO Harris Bank

Over the past 15 years, Reading Power has been blessed with financial support from businesses and individuals who share our commitment to literacy. We'd like to thank BMO Harris Bank for their continued support, and for becoming the first sponsor of Reading Power's 15th Anniversary Celebration!

"At BMO Harris Bank we look for innovation, collaboration and learning as features of the nonprofit organizations we support, and education is a priority," says Diane Filbin of BMO Harris Bank Community Giving. "The work done by Reading Power with its hands-on, effective methodology is an excellent example of an initiative we want to support."

Reading Power's 15th Anniversary Celebration is scheduled for October 18, 2018 at Highland Park Country Club, and we sincerely hope that all of you will join us! Since 2003, we have changed the lives of more than 2,800 children through the promise of literacy. Funds raised at this event will support our growth to serve more children in North Chicago and Zion, Illinois schools.

Tutor Spotlight:
It's A Family Affair

Husband and wife Koula and Ed Kanne and their daughter Zacho Moberg have been tutoring at Reading Power for the last two years. Every Friday morning, they arrive at Forrestal  school excited and ready to deliver the promise of literacy to their students.

"It's an amazing opportunity to make a positive difference in children's lives at a crucial time in their early development," says Ed Kanne, PhD. "The program has a tried and proven methodology for helping the students learn how to read and write. We love seeing our students flourish into confident readers, thinkers and writers."

As the school year comes to an end, the Kannes, like many tutors, are so impressed with the progress their students have made. "A second grade student who we tutored in Reading Power for two years was flourishing in confidence and self assurance," says Koula. "At the end of one of our tutoring sessions, I asked, 'So, are you going to be a doctor when you grow up?' The student replied: 'How did you know I was planning to be a doctor?'"

The Kannes are looking forward to their third year of tutoring next year. "We passionately recommend the rewarding personal experience of helping children grow academically," concludes Ed. "We also stress the precious chance to make a significant contribution to the students' academic progress by building their self-confidence and the ability to enrich their lives through reading and writing."
