Community Day with
First Responders 

WHEN:     Sunday, June 24, 2012
 

WHERE:   Harding Elementary

                   820 Lincoln Avenue, Erie PA

 

TIME:        2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

 

A Community Day is an ideal opportunity for First Responders and individuals with ASD and their families to meet and interact in a non-emergency situation.

 

A brief demonstration will be provided by:  

  • City of Erie - Police "Copps Unit"
  • City of Erie - Fire Department
  • EmergyCare - EMT and ambulance
  • 911 Training Public Safety

Parents will receive resources to help in speaking with their children about their local First Responders.  Individuals with ASD will have an opportunity to explore a police car, fire truck, and ambulance.   The intent is to make it a pleasant experience. 

 

Light snacks and water will be provided.  See you on the 24th!

 

Support Group - Education               Opportunities

ASA-NWPA Support Group will not meet during June, July, and August.
 
Please plan to join us for a special training opportunity in the fall.  A three-part mini-series on "Developing Strong IEP's and Working with School Teams Beginning with the End in Mind."
 
The series will be held from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, September 13, Thursday, October 11, Thursday, November 8

Sensory & Social Opportunities

The Autism Society NWPA will be providing weekly opportunities throughout the summer.  

The abrupt change in guidelines 
for Summer Therapeutic Activities Programs has left many families with no summer autism program.  
 
These outings are designed  to develop:   community awareness and interaction through structured community based experiences; and develop and maintain recreation and leisure skills.
 

All ages of individuals with ASD and their families are invited to join the summer outings.


OUTINGS WILL INCLUDE:
Jumpin Jungle
Asbury Woods
Wooden Playground & Picnic
Bowling
Presque Isle State Park (Boat Rides)
Children's Museum
Scavenger Hunt & Lunch
EMTA Trainer Bus
 
The weekly outings will begin the week of June 25th.  More information to be provided via email and on our website.
 
Social Skills Group Opportunities
Interested in joining a social skills 
group this summer?  There are local opportunities available.

The groups will meet on Thursdays beginning June 21, 2012
 Ages 4 -6 at 3:30 p.m.
Ages 7 - 9 at 4:30 p.m.
Ages 10 - 12 at 5:30 p.m.
 
Each age group will cover the topic
of boundaries, unwritten rules, listening skills, how to initiate interactions with peers, identifying what it means to be a friend.
