The Science of Autism:

Transformative Advances Paving the Way to A New

Future in Treatment and Care

In this presentation, Dr. Minshew will highlight important new milestones in the understanding of ASD and the emerging future of autism treatment and services.  In many respects, there are two worlds of autism-the one experienced by verbal, average and above average IQ individuals whose potential is exemplified by Dr. Temple Grandin and Mr. John Robison. The other world of autism is the one experienced by nonverbal individuals with autism who may lack comprehension of the world and struggle to gain basic skills for daily living. Treatments are emerging for both groups of individuals that will greatly enhance function and outcome.  Remarkable scientific advances are changing the present and future for all individuals with autism.

______________

Dr. Minshew is a child neurologist and director of the NIH/NICHD Autism Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh-Carnegie Mellon University.

For the past 25 years, she has pursued research about how individuals with autism think and how the brain functions and is differently connected.  She has also contributed to the search for genes relevant to autism that regulate brain development.

Dr. Minshew is now working with several colleagues on the development of novel interventions for autism that reflect the scientific advances of the last two decades and on the cognitive, neural and genetic bases of the individual variability or heterogeneity to provide the basis for individualization of treatment.
