Spring Volunteer Opportunities
Join us for the Spring clean-up at Avenues residences organized by the Avenues’ Partnership Boards on Saturday May 19. The event will be held from 9:30 A.M.-12:30 P.M. and lunch with the residents of Avenues to Independence to follow.

This is an opportunity to test your gardening skills while getting to know other board members and also the residents of Avenues. If you or your group would like to help them spruce up the residential homes for Spring please contact Stephen Kray at skray@avenuestoindependence.org
Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Help the Recycling Avenues team by volunteering to drive around the community to pick up the bins used for donating electronics. The time required would be about 1-3 hours a week and locations would vary. To find out more information please contact Lisa Torres at ltorres@avenuestoindependence.org and Recyclingavenue2@gmail.com

Get to Know our Volunteers Kathy & Lynne!
In this edition we have a double feature of volunteers who have been a part of Avenues for more than 21 years. Kathy Seiwert (pictured right) and Lynne Hjelmberg (pictured left) knew after attending the Love Affair in 1997 that they wanted to be a part of Avenues. They wanted to work closely with the Avenues residents so they created the Tuesday Night Friends social group that meets monthly. Kathy and Lynne, along with local high school students, help to encourage creativity through crafts, dancing, exercise and singing. They encourage everyone to volunteer and spend time doing what you love.
What has been your favorite part of volunteering with Avenues?

Our favorite part of being involved with Avenues has been the same since "day one"...sharing our life with our Avenues friends. Over the many years, we have shared excitement and challenges. We truly are "friends" who talk about anything and everything with ease. We enjoy playing games together and learning new things. We just like being with each other!

You have had an opportunity to mentor so many young adults through the Tuesday Night Friends group, why do you think volunteerism is so important for this generation?

We believe volunteering should be a foundation of life and needs to be nurtured and encouraged by family, friends and peers. We know that you get much more in return than the effort you give. It is important for each of us to encourage the next generations that "giving back" is expected and rewarding. We are very proud of the young people, who over the years have been a part of Tuesday Night Friends. They are kind, giving, hardworking and caring and many of them have gone on to work with individuals with special needs individuals

Summer is almost here, do you have any big plans?
Kathy is spending time with family and grand kids. As owner of a travel agency, is also excited to travel and explore Alaska this June. Lynne is a passionate gardener and that's where you will find her this summer!
