A Message from the New NHC Acting Board Chair

As planned, this week the role of acting Board Chair role will shift from David Podell to me. I'll be serving until the end of Summer Institute, when we'll elect officers for the coming year. Let me take this opportunity to emphasize three points:

First, let's acknowledge and appreciate David's consistent, tireless, and pro-active leadership this past year. He's been an exemplary volunteer leader. Show your thanks when you see him in August!

Second, invite your friends. This is a wonderful time to contact your friends, family, and acquaintances about attending Summer Institute. (Deadline for tuition & travel grants is this week.) Registration numbers are strong and we're hoping for a banner year. So, tell folks about the great courses, "like" our Facebook page, and talk up the Summer Institute!

Third, let me share my priorities for the next 8 weeks. I aim to:

  • Enjoy volunteering and encourage you all to enjoy it, too.
  • Develop the NHC's leadership. Our Nominations Committee is conducting a search for potential Board members, committee chairs, and officers. Please contact us to pitch in with this effort or to nominate volunteer leaders... including yourself!
  • Support this year's Institute Planning Committee (led by Diane Klein and Uel Bergey) and begin recruiting volunteers for the 2013 Institute.

I look forward to working with you over the next 2 months and seeing you in August. Don't hesitate to email me at hillel.gray@havurah.org with your feedback and ideas, to ask what NHC can do to support you in gearing up for Institute, or to ask what you can do for the NHC community.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and holy summer,

Kol tuv,

Hillel Gray

 2012 Institute Fundraiser:  Course Underwriting

Veteran Institute attendees, take note!  This year's Institute program will not include a live auction.  If you are someone who has helped the NHC by bidding on "nothing" at an evening program live auction, we want you to know that won't be happening this year. Express your loyalty and financial support of the Summer Institute by underwriting a course or teacher.  This sponsorship opportunity is available whether you can join us at Institute this year or not. Support our great courses and teachers this year!

Course Spotlight on Ahava Rabbah: Learning, Loving, Living

What is a healthy balance between unlimited giving and bounded constraint in relationship? What does our tradition say about how we should teach and learn? How much do we need to follow Jewish tradition to have a healthy spiritual life? These questions are embedded in the text of the Ahava Rabbah prayer. Drawing upon a mix of text study and experiential interpretation, this course will explore these questions with the goal of deepening our relationships with our loved ones and our tradition.

Nathan Martin works as the Director of Student Life at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. Nathan draws inspiration from Jewish mystical and mindfulness traditions for his activism for a healthier planet. He is blessed with a loving partner, Abby Weinberg, and often finds his two children to be his best teachers!

2012 Workshop Requests

Morning and afternoon one-hour workshops are the heart and soul of the Institute, and they hearken back to our most vital DIY origins.  A workshop is a great way to share your skills and interests with others at Institute.  From crocheting kippahs to queer ethics, from Israeli dancing to text study to drinking songs, share your expertise and passion with us all!  Most workshops are one-time events; a few multi-session workshops may be offered but they need to be structured to permit drop-ins. This year workshops will take place from 11am-noon and from 3:30-4:30pm. If you would like to offer a workshop, send a title, two to three sentence description of the workshop, and two sentence bio to workshops@havurah.org. Please indicate if you have a preference as to day/time for the workshop, and please put the word "workshops" in the subject line.
