Welcome!
It is hard to believe The village of Brantome in the French Countrysidesummer is over and it is back to school time. We took a brief hiatus from The Style Report as we were busier than ever before. I was able to fit in a once-in-a- lifetime family trip in early June to France and London. I was inspired by the French architecture, fashion and food -- in that order. A trip to the Dordogne region of France, pictured, reinforced my love for simple French Country style.

We also spent most of the spring and summer redesigning the PJ & Company web site - www.pjhomestyling.com -  thanks to our incredibly hard working and talented marketing associate, Rebecca. The new site reflects our company, is easy to navigate, and showcases our most recent interior decorating and home staging work. Please take the time to visit and let us know what you think.

The most exciting news for us this September, is that our company is the Official Interior Decorating and Home Staging Sponsor of the Home of Distinction, by Pecoy Signature Homes, that is also being promoted by Fox-TV, the Hartford Courant, Hartford Magazine and New Haven Living Magazine. We have been working diligently these past few months selecting and coordinating the interior furnishings for this Showcase custom home and collaborating with furniture and accessory partners including Chapter One, Williams-Sonoma, Puritan Furniture, Tommy Bahama, and Lord & Taylor's. We hope you will stop by.

Finally, this month is a time to take stock of your home -- both inside and out. Whether you are considering updating your family room or creating a new landscape for your front yard. We share with you some of our favorite trends this fall to consider incorporating into your own lifestyle. Enjoy!

Fall 2013 Home Styling and Decor Trends

The start of a new season brings with it new influences in design and decor, from fashion to home furnishings. As an interior decorator, these seasonal transitions are always an exciting time to find new inspiration. These are some of the top influences in home decor that we think will have staying power into 2014.

Style & Comfort

This fall, home decor is more glamorous with a focus on creating living spaces that are beautiful yet comfortable. We're seeing simpler more elegant furnishings with clean lines balanced with bold fabrics, patterns and colors on point with current trends. Today's decorating is about creating timeless design accented with modern style.

Ballard Designs

Shades of Grey

Grey is the new neutral across home decor and design. From paint colors to upholstery and even wood finishes, warm grey furnishings and decor are a strong color foundation for a room. Sherwin Williams Amazing Grey and Benjamin Moore's French Grey are two wonderful colors we have used in our client's home decor. Contrasting pieces such as the white ottoman and raspberry and gold silk pillows pictured below create a sleek, modern style.

Old Is New Again

Traditional home furnishings are making a comeback with a modern twist. Classic silhouettes such as the Wingback Chair are being reintroduced for today's home with modern styling and details. Vintage inspired pieces and decor are being infused with new bold fabrics, patterns and colors to add a contemporary flair and sophistication.

Animal Prints

Animal prints are so big this fall we're mentioning them twice (animal prints are also popular in Kids room Decor). A simple animal print pillow or chair in neutral tones adds a chic, sophistication to any room. Deeper, earthy tones and textures are also replacing some of the brighter spring and summer hues.

Williams-Sonoma
Home Staging Case Study: Eliminating Buyer Confusion and Creating Emotional Connections

When I first met with our recent client, Stuart, he shared memories of raising his family, gatherings with friends and 23 years in his beautiful 3,200 square foot contemporary home.

The home offered tremendous open space and wonderful features, but for the past several years, key rooms in the home were converted to Stu's home office suite. The living and dining room housed desks, chairs and video editing equipment -- an uninviting space for a young family seeking a place to call home and make their own memories.

Realtor, Ellen Levada of Calcagni in Cheshire, recommended our staging services to make the home attractive to buyers, get it sold and for top dollar. With a new home already purchased,  Stu was motivated and understood the importance of staging to sell. After our initial meeting he embraced our proposal to stage 14 rooms and showcase the open floor plan, square footage and wonderful architectural details of the home.

Buyers today want move-in condition homes with updated decor that can easily fit their lifestyle and furnishings. Fresh modern paint choices in several of the rooms and new carpeting provided a neutral canvas for furnishings and decor. Our team then transformed 14 rooms in the home in a single day to "wow" buyers and help establish an emotional connection to the space.

Professional listing photos captured the beauty of the home and in just a short 14 days on the market the home sold and is now under contract!

The beautiful open living room offers great windows, high ceilings and hardwood floors but as an office suite would not engage buyers. We wanted to show buyers - especially those with children - how they can use the space. We removed all of the office furniture and replaced it with appropriate furnishings including a couch, love seat, and tables. We also painted the walls a more modern, neutral color, and accessorized.

This home's dining room was open to the living room and featured beautiful natural light but was another room being used as office space. We continued the updated paint color throughout this space and added an elegant dining room table, chairs and accessories.

This spacious master bedroom looked small and uninviting. A warm neutral wall color showcases the rooms size and high ceilings. We replaced the existing bedding with more sophisticated decor in gold and taupe tones to create a modern retreat.

Accessorizing in Style: Kids Decor Trends
Back to School isn't just a time to think about filling your student's backpack with supplies they need to do well in the class room. It's also the perfect time of year to update your child's room at home -- whether they are growing up and ready for new dcor or need help organizing all of their favorite things to help them do well in the year ahead.

Whether you're outfitting a new dorm room or looking to update your child's bedroom, here are three trends we're expecting to see for the upcoming fall season.

Polka Dots and Patterns

Bold patterns are popular for all ages this season and a perfect fit for kids and teens. Polka dots and animal prints are young, stylish options and available this fall in everything from bedding and window treatments to lamp shades and chairs. We're also seeing small and eye popping patterns in darker hues, such as browns and dark blue.

Stylish Organization

A great decorative solution for students to stay organized and keep clutter out of site are colorful boxes and bins. They add modern style to any room and stackable boxes are an ideal organization accessory for younger students, teens as well as those that are college bound and living in small dorm spaces.

Decal Your Wall

Wall decals are one of the hottest trends to transform a room. Available in different designs and themes, decals are easy to put up (no hardware required!) and shouldn't damage the wall when you remove them in future years. Create a design with a small group of decals or make a bold statement with a graphic that fills a wall.
