The Southern Gas Corridor pipeline that bridges Europe with the Caspian Sea came online on May 29, when Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev opened a valve at the Sangachal terminal near Baku, allowing gas to start flowing westward. “Today, while marking the inauguration of the Southern Gas Corridor on this historic day, we see how timely and wise that step was,” said President Aliyev.

President Donald Trump sent a letter to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulating the country on its 100
th
anniversary. Trump wrote: “Azerbaijan and the United States share a close partnership, working together to solve difficult regional challenges. I appreciate your cooperation on security and counterterrorism, as well as our longstanding commercial ties. The coming months bring opportunities to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which would create even more possibilities for U.S.-Azerbaijani cooperation.”

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated Azerbaijan on its centennial, noting it was the world’s first Muslim-majority republic and one of the first countries in the world to grant women the right to vote. “Since the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has been a valued partner of the United States,” Pompeo wrote. “We look forward to continuing our longstanding cooperation and deepening our work together on security, energy, and democratic governance and to further strengthen ties between our countries.”

The First Republic, as it is often referred to domestically, survived for only 23 months, before the bolsheviks took control of Azerbaijan and subsequently incorporated it into the Soviet Union as one its constituent republics. Despite its short existence, the legacy of this concerted national attempt at sovereignty and democratic governance remained a cornerstone of contemporary Azerbaijan and a critical factor in the formation of Azerbaijani national identity.

Elmir Valizade, Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Transport, Communications and High Technologies, Azerbaijan invited U.S. companies to invest in the non-oil sector of the economy while speaking at the 2018 Trans-Caspian Forum in Washington D.C. “Azerbaijan has improved its position in the leading international business ratings, and new opportunities for cooperation in the non-oil sector have been created for U.S. companies, including in transport and logistics, high technology, infrastructure, industry and other fields,” said Valizade.

Consistent with Azerbaijan’s heritage of competing in equestrian sports, the country will host the Sixth Arena Polo World Cup at the Elite Horse & Polo Club in Baku. Chovgan, a precursor to polo, has been played in Azerbaijan for thousands of years. Arena polo is a fast-paced, three-on-three version of the traditional sport.
