U.S. Nominates New Ambassador to Azerbaijan

President Donald Trump has nominated Earle D. Litzenberger, a career U.S. Foreign Service Officer who has served at NATO and in Serbia, Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan, as the new U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan, pending confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Litzenberger speaks French, Russian, Serbian and Bulgarian.

The U.S. supports the construction of a gas pipeline providing for the transportation of Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz field to Europe, U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry said at a briefing on a trip to Russia on September 13.

The Trans Adriatic Pipeline, which will take Azerbaijani gas to Europe and will help meet Italy’s energy needs, will be completed on time, said Vitaliy Baylarbayov, SOCAR’s deputy vice president for investments and marketing, during an Atlantic Council webcast in Washington D.C., eliminating the need for any Plan B.

Azerbaijan has earned more than $135 billion in oil and gas revenue from the development of the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) fields since 2001, according to the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan. Thirteen companies from eight countries -- Azerbaijan, the U.S., Great Britain, Russia, Turkey, Norway, Japan, and Saudi Arabia – work together in the fields.

Azerbaijan is ready for substantive and intensive negotiations on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said at a meeting with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger. The illegal presence of the Armenian armed forces in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan remains a primary threat to regional peace and security, said Mammadyarov.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan officiated over a joint Azerbaijani-Turkish military parade in Baku’s Freedom Square, where thousands of service members marched to celebrate the 100 th anniversary of Baku’s liberation from Bolshevik and Dashnak forces in 1918.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics, the 2018 Global Youth Leadership Forum comes to Baku, Azerbaijan from Sept. 24-28. Some 120 youth leaders with and without intellectual disabilities from 45 countries will gather in Baku. The Forum will see these young leaders and an additional 100 adult leaders from around the world develop group projects to create more inclusive communities in their home countries.

Baku will host the World Judo Championship beginning on September 20, which will see male and female judo athletes from 133 countries participate. The Judo World Championships and the Olympic judo competition are the world’s top two judo events. The festival, featuring filmmakers under the age of 35, is open to Azerbaijani and foreign directors alike. Films cannot exceed 35 minutes in length. The competition will also feature an opportunity for filmmakers to pitch upcoming projects to investors.
