Shalom Parents,

In just a few weeks, Tu B'Shevat reminds us that even while we're in the midst of cold and snow, spring is on its way. While it may be hard to picture trees in full bloom at this time of the year, we celebrate the buds appearing on the first trees in Israel, the seeds from which spring emerges. Our tradition teaches us about the importance of planting seeds which will lead to something much greater, in the story of Choni who was traveling and saw a man planting a carob tree.

Choni asked him, "How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?"

"Seventy years," the man replied.

"Do you think that you will live another 70 years?" Choni asked.

The man replied, "I found carob trees growing when I was born, because my parents and grandparents planted them for me, so I, too, plant them for my children."

Choni sat down to have a meal in a cave, and sleep overcame him. He continued to sleep for 70 years. When he woke up he saw what looked like the same man gathering beautiful fruit from the carob tree.

"Are you the man who planted this tree?" Choni asked.

"No, I am his grandson," the man replied.

Choni then realized that he had slept for 70 years, and that the man's words had come true!

Choni's story reminds us of the importance of the seeds we plant. I want to thank you for the seeds of knowledge you are planting for your children through Jewish education, both at home and here at our Youth and Learning Center. Whether we are planting the seeds of a tree or seeds of knowledge, it might take years to see the full benefit, but we know that we are providing a bright future for our children!
