Shalom Parents,
As we brace for colder weather outside and the days keep getting shorter and shorter, we look forward to the warmth and light in our homes next month from the candles we will light on our Hanukkiyah, the time we spend with family and friends, the latkes and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) we eat, the games of dreidel we play, and the gifts we give and receive this Hanukkah.
There was a great debate over Jewish practice 2,000 years ago on how we should light our Hanukkiyah. One rabbi, Shammai, said we should light eight candles on the first night and remove one for each following night corresponding to how many days we have left. Hillel, on the other hand, said we should light one candle the first night and add one for each following night, because we should always be ascending in holiness. Hillel won the debate, reminding us all that now is the best time to strive to find new ways to connect with our community and our traditions. May we make this Hanukkah our best yet and always be searching to add holiness to our lives!
