Shalom Parents,
Believe it or not, Hanukkah is right around the corner! We are getting ready here at B'nai Jeshurun with our Ta'am Ha-Moed Chanukah program for PreK-2nd grade students and families (run in part by our high school students), special Chanukah programs for our 3rd-6th grade students, and our Congregational Chanukah Party on December 3rd.
While it seems strange that Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving this year, in many ways the timing could not be more appropriate. We owe a tremendous thanks to the Maccabees, a small band of people who were not willing to accept a forced assimilation into the greater culture. The Maccabees fought for the right to be who they were when so many around them, including many Jews, were adopting a Greek way of life to the exclusion of their own heritage. The Maccabees demonstrated, to us as much as to the Jews of their own time, that we can practice Judaism proudly and live an enriching Jewish life even as we embrace American culture.
Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah!

Special Teen Program for
8th - 12th Graders
The Voyage of the St. Louis
Refuge Denied
Monday, December 9
B'nai Jeshurun Congregation
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
An image of young passengers on the St. Louis Please join us for this special teen program (8th - 12th grades) and discussion on the ill-fated 1939 voyage of the St. Louis, a passenger liner carrying 937 mostly Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. The St. Louis was turned away by the Cuban government and refused safe haven in the United States. Tragically, the ship returned to Europe.
Scott Miller, Director of Curatorial Affairs and co-author of the book Refuge Denied: The St. Louis Passengers and the Holocaust, will discuss the Museum's ten-year project to uncover the fate of every refugee aboard the St. Louis and will focus on the stories of the younger passengers of the ship.
For more information or to RSVP, please contact Jed Silberg in the Museum's Midwest Regional Office at 847-433-8099.
This event is sponsored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
