"Shipwreck in the Arctic: Survival in Siberia, 1881-1882" with  David Hirzel
Wednesday, October 12th 7 PM

Join us, for an evening with David Hirzel, Editor of "Rough Weather All Day", the diary of Patrick Cahill. He was Machinist's Mate on the USS Rodgers, sent through the Bering Strait in 1881 to search for the missing polar exploration ship, Jeannette (1879).

David will discuss the journey of the USS Rodgers as it left San Francisco June 16, 1881 to spend the summer charting the Arctic Waters.

Anchored in St. Lawrence Bay, Siberia for the winter, the USS Rodgers caught fire and burned to the waterline. Cahill and 33 other seamen, stranded on the barren shores, were taken in by the natives living there, who had almost nothing of their own to share...

As we will be providing refreshments, reservations are encouraged.
