Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
BAEF joined the nation in recognizing and honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 16, 2017.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States honoring the achievements of Martin Luther King, Jr. - the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement to end racial segregation. It is observed on the  third Monday of January each year, which is close to January 15, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was the most influential of African American civil rights leaders during the 1960s. He was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, facilities, and employment, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was awarded the  Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968.

The bill established the holiday was signed by the President Ronald Reagan on November 2, 1983. The first observance nationwide was in 1986, but some states opposed observed it as a paid holiday for state employees. As of the year 2000 all of the states officially recognize the holiday.

Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of the only three people who have national holidays in the USA, the other two are Christopher Columbus and George Washington.

Snapshot of the 2015-2016 BAEF School Year
The Bedford Area Educational Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that supports the teachers and students in Bedford County Public Schools. The Foundation awards grants to teachers for classroom enrichment projects. These projects are not funded through the school budget and would not be possible without the Bedford Area Educational Foundation or its sponsors.

The Foundation funded 21 grants during the 2015-2016 school year. Grants were made at elementary, middle, and high schools throughout Bedford County. The requests are initiated by teachers, approved by school administrators, and then considered for funding by the Foundation Board of Directors. Applications are available to all teachers in Bedford County Public Schools. Please visit our website to learn more about the Foundation or to apply for a grant at www.bedfordeducation.com.

Support BAEF in 2017!
As you can see from the list of 2016 grants above, and the snapshot of the 2015-2016 school year, the Bedford Area Educational Foundation significantly impacts learning and teaching throughout Bedford County.

We hope you will financially support the Bedford Area Educational Foundation in 2017. Gifts from companies, foundations, and individuals are the only way we are able to award classroom grants on a quarterly basis. BAEF is currently reviewing ten grant applications that it received this January. All are worthwhile projects, but only a portion of them can be funded at this time due to funding limitations.

Please support the Bedford Area Educational Foundation with a gift today. You gift is fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by the law. Please make your check payable to the Bedford Area Educational Foundation, and mail it to P. O. Box 2434 in Forest, VA 24551. If you have any questions about how you can support the Bedford Area Educational Foundation, please contact Michele Shaffer at info@bedfordeducation.com. Thank you for supporting the Bedford Area Educational Foundation!
