Message from the BALIF Board
|
With Pride Month 2016 now in the rearview mirror, I think we can all take immense...well, Pride... in how our community responded to the tragic events in Orlando. Robust celebrations occurred -- albeit with enhanced police presence -- that were fun, peaceful, and respectful to those who our community lost. The popular Pride hashtags #alwayskeepdancing and #morelovelesshate couldn't have reflected our community better. Thanks to all BALIF members who participated in the myriad of Pride events that took place in and around SF, including the crack-of-dawn Jones Day BALIF Pride Brunch.
Although July tends to be a slower month for BALIF events, this month is proving to be the exception to the general rule, as we have two very exciting events coming up. The first is a
July 19 CLE panel event hosted by the Federal Magistrate Judge's Association that aims to discuss diversity in the federal magistrate judge ranks.
More information on this event is available on the BALIF website.
Also, what would summer be without the opportunity to throw back a couple ice cold beverages with friends and colleagues? Quench that thirst at
BALIF's (and co-host SFTLA's) July happy hour at the Patriot House at 2 Embarcadero Center from
5:30 - 7:30 on
July 21.

BALIF Scholar Recipient
|
BALIF and the
Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (APABA-SV) are pleased to announce Ian Barber, a rising 2L at Hastings, as their 2016 BALIF/ABAPA-SV Joint Scholarship recipient. Out of many applicants who submitted applications by 06/13/16, Ian was selected to receive the one $3,000 scholarship. Ian's commitment to LGBT representation and helping asylum seekers find safety in the United States were some of the determining factors leading to his selection. Congratulations, Ian!

For more than thirty years, BALIF has been participating as amicus - a friend of the court - in major cases raising issues of concern to the LGBT community and our allies. Check out the new
archive
on BALIF's website, where you can learn more about BALIF's amicus participation and read BALIF's briefs on a wide range of issues, including: the rights of same-sex parents and partners; the unconstitutionality of state sodomy statutes; the interpretation of disability civil rights laws to people with HIV/AIDS; Don't Ask, Don't Tell; the scope of Title VII and other workplace protections for LGBTs under federal and California law; the asserted First Amendment rights of organizations that explicitly exclude LGBTs; marriage equality; medical care for transgender prisoners; and more.
Please contact BALIF's Amicus Committee Chair, Julie Wilensky,
