Message from the BALIF Board
|
This is a hard time emotionally. A little over a month ago, a gunman shot and killed 49 people and wounded 53 others out dancing at Latin night at an LGBT club in Orlando in a hate crime/terrorist attack. Earlier this month, Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, and Philando Castile in Minnesota, were shot and killed by police officers. Days later, another gunman with an assault rifle shot and killed 5 Dallas police officers at a Black Lives Matter protest rally. The pain from these events is still very raw and I am shaken about the safety and fate of our country.
But I am listening. And watching. And talking. And it seems like so many others of us are too. From this extreme pain, I think there is an opportunity for meaningful change in our country. For us to empathize and understand each other. And work together to make a better world for all of us.
BALIF continues to try to do its part. On
August 10, 2016, BALIF and the American Constitution Society are co-sponsoring a panel addressing how our business leaders, government and activists are working together via litigation and public policy to promote civil rights for transgender persons. Come listen to Sasha Buchert and Ilona Turner from the Transgender Law Center, Roberta Steele from the EEOC, and Kyle Graden from Salesforce address these cutting edge issues in the LGBT movement. RSVPs are necessary with lunch graciously being provided by Morrison & Foerster LLP.
Please click here for more details!
And don't forget to come to
BALIF's joint happy hour with SFTLA on
July 21 from 5:30-7:30 at the Patriot House in 2 Embarcadero Center. Watch for
BALIF's Women and Money event on September 8, 2016 - more details coming soon.
Each of us has the power to make the world a better place. Try smiling at a stranger today. Or take a minute to help someone else. It is amazing how infectious positive energy can be.

The Next LGBT Rights Battleground:
Transgender Rights in Court and
Public Policy
|
The Bay Area Lawyer Chapter of the American Constitution Society and Bay Area Lawyers for
Individual Freedom present:
Following the Supreme Court's historic marriage equality ruling last year in Obergefell v. Hodges, reactionary forces at the
state level are scrambling to rebuild the crumbling edifice of discrimination by passing hateful "religious freedom" laws. In a
revealing and disturbing twist they are now targeting transgender Americans in their push to enshrine hate in the law. This
panel discussion will focus on the efforts of those groups to support LGBT rights, particularly those of transgender people
who are being targeted. We will hear from transgender advocates on their cutting edge litigation, a representative from the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on what the agency and the administration are doing to stamp out
discrimination, and a representative from Salesforce to talk about how the business community is putting its weight (and
money) behind LGBT equality.

For more than thirty years, BALIF has been participating as amicus - a friend of the court - in major cases raising issues of concern to the LGBT community and our allies. Check out the new
archive
on BALIF's website, where you can learn more about BALIF's amicus participation and read BALIF's briefs on a wide range of issues, including: the rights of same-sex parents and partners; the unconstitutionality of state sodomy statutes; the interpretation of disability civil rights laws to people with HIV/AIDS; Don't Ask, Don't Tell; the scope of Title VII and other workplace protections for LGBTs under federal and California law; the asserted First Amendment rights of organizations that explicitly exclude LGBTs; marriage equality; medical care for transgender prisoners; and more.
Please contact BALIF's Amicus Committee Chair, Julie Wilensky,
