BASCA's Wall of Color Mural Project
Local Artist, Sophie Dentiste
Local Artist Shares Talents with BASCA
Photo by Jonah Dentiste, Story by Sophie Dentiste

This charity Mural, for Basca Inc. supports special needs adults in their living and learning, developing new skills and abilities to create things like bird ho uses and benches and sell to the community. They do such a wonderful job and enhance the lives of so many families.

We lost our oldest son in 02, who was handicapped and would be 22 now. It is unfathomable for most people to imagine the lifetime challenge and blessings of raising an adult with special needs.

As local individuals and businesses choose to come alongside BASCA and support them in their goals, they can sponsor different icons in my mural and I come back and paint them in. I recently painted the oranges, alligator mama and her baby, and the fantasy castle. It has been a fun project and still ongoing as we educate the community on who BASCA is and what they do for so many. I encourage businesses in the First Coast area that have a special heart for special needs to go to their website at www.bascainc.org and learn more about BASCA and their accomplishments.

Do you want to sponsor a piece of this beautiful mural? Click HERE to see the available selections. At check out type your selection in the MEMO box. For more information or assistance with your selection please contact Melissa Stewart at [email protected] or call our office at (904) 541-1742.

Lily makes a new friend.

Beat the Heat and Make a Friend
Photos and Story by Rhonda Bowers

It has been hot, hot, hot outside! One way to beat the heat is with a cool treat so the gals at Peoria and their trusty dog, Lily, took a trip to one of our favorite sweet spots Jeremiah's. Enjoying a cool treat sure is a fun way to spend time with your friends.

Speaking of friends, Peoria recently had a special respite guest, Katie. Lilly tried all day to become her friend. Lily really wanted to help Katie adjust to her new, sometimes scary, surroundings. Lilly never gave up and by the end of the day she won over Katie's heart and everyone became friends.

"You have been my friend," replied Charlotte. "that in itself is a tremendous thing." -E.B. White

BASCA's Building Dreams Campaign
On October 16, 2015, BASCA Inc.'s ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening and the culmination of a dream, the New Campus located at 352 Stowe Ave.  After months of renovations on the long vacant building a new era began for the non-profit founded in 1994, first located on donated property. Today that dream of a new location occupies 25,000 square feet dedicated to programs for intellectually and developmentally challenged individuals in Northeast Florida.

The Custom Creations Training and Manufacturing portion of the building brings independence and personal satisfaction to the participants with the ability to build birdhouses, flower boxes and benches.  Adaptive equipment allows this possibility.  Products will soon be available for purchase in the BASCA Boutique to be located in a front section of the new location. Two additional  distinct areas are devoted to Adult Day Training. Aside from creative learning programs, it boasts of fitness and computer rooms for use by the participants.  Let's not forget the staff!  The New Campus houses separate offices  for each individual, with the lobby and conference room completing the center space.

Yes, this building is a dream come true for BASCA.

BASCA also encompasses four L.I.F.E. Group Homes in Orange Park which provide "Living In a Family Environment".  A fifth group home, under construction, is to open this Fall.

But, as we all know along with this dream comes the reality of funding.  Our Capital Campaign of $1.8 million includes the purchase and renovation of this New Campus, as well as additions, repairs, and furnishings for our group homes.  We invite you to support BASCA's efforts with a direct gift, pledge, or honorarium.  Naming opportunities are available.

Please remember that no gift is too small; and, of course, no gift is too large!

Thanking you in advance,
The Individuals who rely on BASCA programs and services.
BASCA and the Community: New Friends from 4Rivers Smokehouse
Volunteers from 4Rivers spend a Sunday with BASCA.
Making new friends isn't always easy. All it takes is for one person to reach out to another with an invitation. This is exactly how BASCA became friends with 4 Rivers Smokehouse. Last fall BASCA invited 4 Rivers to participate in our annual Chomp 'N Stomp 5K/1 Mile race. They graciously said 'yes' and a wonderful friendship began.

4 Rivers has continued to support us throughout the year and in July they reached out to us, as friends often do, and inquired if we needed any help on their annual service day. Arrangements were made and our good friends from 4 Rivers provided us with 19 volunteers on Sunday, July 17, 2016. Together we worked on maintaining the landscaping, cleaning common areas, painting parking striping and clearing out one of our conference rooms. After a couple hours of hard work in the hot sun, we traveled to Lakeside Villa where the ladies were waiting to give our friends from 4 Rivers a house tour and provide some much needed refreshments.

We continue to provide wonderful programs and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with the support of wonderful community friends like 4 Rivers Smokehouse. For that we say, "Thank You!".

Are you part of a group that would love to connect with BASCA? We have many volunteer opportunities for your organization. Contact Lucy Conrad at [email protected] or call our office at (904) 541-1742 for more information.
