Connect at a Glance

Despite staff vacations, the BC ELN Office continues to buzz with activity through these hot summer days. In this issue of Connect we share our latest collection of reports, highlight some interesting things we learned at the EDS user group workshop, and create "tweetable" service updates. If you have questions about anything, contact us!

New Actions & Achievements Reports Released

In the April issue of BC ELN Connect we announced the release of the annual Innovation & Success report. We have since released another four annual reports for key services: Arca, AskAway, OutLook OnLine, and WriteAway.

In addition to reporting progress and demonstrating value, this year we created engaging infographics to explain services (shout out to Cristen Polley for her design skills!). We encourage you to peruse these reports at the Actions & Achievements section of our website.

EBSCO Discovery Service Workshop 2017: A Day of Discovery!

The 3rd Annual BC EDS User Group/Workshop session was presented by EBSCO with coordination assistance from BC ELN on June 6th, 2017. The full day session was very popular and fully attended by EDS users from across the province. A group of EBSCO sales, development, and product experts presented on a wide-range of topics related to EDS, Full Text Finder, Curriculum Builder, OpenAthens, User Experience (UX) research, Stacks CMS, and FOLIO open source ILS. Participating BC ELN libraries also presented on their experiences and best practices related to EDS.

Highlights included improvements to EDS search & results related to:
  • Citation Algorithm - EDS detects citation searches based on different citation styles and tries to match and pull in results to exactly retrieve the desired item.
  • Auto-Correct - If the system, which learns as it goes, has a high confidence that a search is misspelled EDS will automatically show you corrected results but will only just suggest when unsure.
  • Back-End Thesaurus - The updated EDS back-end thesaurus uses a unified subject index to match-up descriptors from different databases and make cross-searching more effective. For example when a student searches for "gambling addiction" results are matched with authorised language from databases such as Academic Search (DE Compulsive Gambling) and also PsycINFO (DE Pathological Gambling) so students don't necessarily have to know the "correct" language for each database. The EDS thesaurus also treats Canadian & American spellings the same so students won't be stymied by geographical differences!
  • Exact Journal Match - EBSCO has added an exact Journal Title match placard at the top which is populated from your Full Text Finder Holdings Management.
  • Research Starter - The customisable research starter placards can be set-up by individual libraries using CSS/XML to support custom guides/results suggesting library-specific information from a variety of sources including Canvas, SpringShare LibGuides, Stackmap, your website and many more. Contact EBSCO Technical Support for assistance.
  • User Experience (UX) - The EBSCO User Experience (UX) team can assist with usability research within your EBSCO products and without including your website! Assistance is free and can be requested from [email protected].

Staff News
The summer has brought some staff changes to BC ELN... The Office has said a sad farewell to Brandon Weigel. Brandon, who has been with BC ELN since 2013, has relocated to Toronto with his wife Darrell and young daughter Amelia. On a positive note, Brandon will continue working remotely from Ontario on a contract basis, focusing mainly on Arca infrastructure.

Sunni Nishimura remains the Arca Administrative Centre lead; Brandon continues his support work for a limited time. With Brandon's departure from AskAway, Cristen Polley has taken over as Coordinator.

Sunni has also joined the e-HLbc Administrative team, focusing on communications and recruitment needs. With Sunni's addition, Leigh Anne Palmer will be able to fully take on the complex licensing portfolios of BC ELN and e-HLbc.

Introducing Dr. Megan Robertson!

Like a pack of proud momma-birds
BC ELN staff flocked around WriteAway Coordinator Megan Robertson on June 9th to celebrate her graduation from the PhD program at the SFU School of Communication.

Megan's doctoral dissertation is called Networks of memory: Vernacular photography, (new) media, and meaning making. Way to go Megan!
