PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

To all BCGS Members and Friends:

My Christmas tree this year is decorated with ornaments from my past.  While cleaning out my mother's house last spring, I found boxes of ornaments we hadn't used in ten years or more.  There's the little birdhouse with the cardinal in it that reminds me of Mom.  The outboard motor ornament that reminds me of Dad.  The moose that reminds me of my brother Chuck, who spent many winters in Alaska, and the carved wood plank with the words Lake Tahoe on it, which was my brother Jamie's favorite place on earth.  In our family, Christmas was, without a doubt, the favorite holiday of the year, and when I look at my tree this year, I feel like they are with me.

What we do in genealogy is remember and honor the lives of the dead, so families are not forgotten by future generations. It's important work: we are creating a legacy which will survive us, and connect the past with the future.  That makes YOU very special people, and I am privileged to call you all my friends.

In 2011, I was looking for other genealogists in the area, people who shared my passion, and that search led to the formation of the Bucks County Genealogical Society in early 2012.  There were skeptics who thought a Society could not succeed because of the records available on the internet, or because there were other groups in other counties.  But the truth is, we need each other, and we need each other in person.  The numbers tell all: 90 people attended the last meeting of 2015, we're ending the year with about 260 members, and we have about 800 on our email list.  We have succeeded in starting a vibrant new organization, and my job is done.

As I turn over the reins to our new President, Mary Butash, I want to acknowledge the many people who contributed to the astounding success of the new BCGS.  First, I'd like to thank our 117 charter members, who took a chance and joined BCGS in its infancy.  The  2012 Board which launched the organization:  Annette Eubank, Gerri Dauer, Erin Collins, Ken Souders and Katherine Hazlett.  The Society's Query Coordinator, Tom Myers, who also donated many of his own transcriptions to our online database.  Dennis Gries, Director of Tax Matters, who keeps us straight with the IRS.

The current Board brought us to the next level and made the Society what it is today:  Pat Gessner, Joann Cosgrove, Cathy Ivins, Jeff Sipler, Nancy Heath, Mary Butash, and Marguerite Mogila.  I love all of them.  I leave you in their very capable hands, along with Marilyn Cook, who joins the Board this year as Secretary.

Merry Christmas to all,
and to all - good hunting in the New Year!

Warm Regards,
Christine Roberts

Your Roots Are Showing:
The Research Behind the Presentation

presented by Dr. Constance (Connie) Ace

The recent BCGS Ancestry Fair featured a Main Event titled "Your Roots Are Showing," presenting the genealogy of local businessman Colin Goodnoe.  This presentation will highlight some of the interesting research techniques, clever "tricks" and unexpected resources that were used in preparing the presentation.  It will focus on evaluating conflicting data and resolving challenging research questions.

About the speaker:   Dr. Connie Ace has been doing genealogical research for over two decades and recently founded Ace Genealogy Research and Consulting to offer her research services to a wider group of clients.  Trained as a research scientist, she spent over 25 years as a biophysicist for various Johnson & Johnson companies, specializing in biomaterials for the repair and regeneration of the human body.
But her passion is history and discovering the human stories behind the names and dates in family trees.  She currently serves as the Chair of the Warrington Township Historical Commission and is an active member of BCGS as well as other historical and genealogical societies.

Did you know there is a Dunkin' Donuts shop in Washington Crossing PA?

It's on your right on Rt 532 just east of the Taylorsville Rd traffic light in a small strip mall. Getting coffee has never been easier. Call them on Friday at 215-321-3700, place your order, and pick it up on the way to the meeting. Remember to get the receipt and our treasurer will reimburse you.

The End of Family Tree Maker?
by Mary C. Butash

No Chicken Little, the sky isn't falling and the world has not come to an end!

Unless you have been out of touch, you know that earlier this month Ancestry.com announced that as of December 31, 2015 they will no longer sell Family Tree Maker, any edition. They also explained that their support for the program will end December 31, 2016. So what does this mean for those who have their trees on FTM? First, the program will continue to work and sync until the end of 2016. It will not disappear from your computer on that date; however, as operating systems change on computers you will begin to lose functions in the program.

So what do we do? First DO NOT PANIC!!  Second, back up your tree either on an external hard drive or in the Cloud or both. Some people, who have their trees on Ancestry and do not have FTM, are actually purchasing it. They will sync their tree with Ancestry, which will bring over all the citations, sources and media that they have on their Ancestry tree. For those of us already with FTM, continue to sync it until that function ends on December 31, 2016. You can still use it after that date but it won't connect to Ancestry.

Now TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND RELAX. You have a year to decide what you want to do. You will probably decide to choose another genealogy software program to use. By the way, did you know, that genealogists do not write the reviews of top 10 programs online? You can use them to find names of software programs, but it is better to talk to others doing genealogy that are using the specific program and find out how they rate it. Many programs allow for use of the software on trial. Sample as many as your energy allows. Dick Eastman is already writing reviews of programs on his blog, and he promises more ( http://blog.eogn.com/)

Finally, how do I react to this major change? I never really liked FTM for Mac but used it because it synced with Ancestry. Now I am FREE! The sun has come out on a new day! We can look at it as a way to force us to do the Genealogy Do-Over that Thomas MacEntee recommended last year. Clean up your trees, add sources.

Remember the cell phone carrier wars? Well, right now, we are in same situation with genealogy software companies. And who benefits? We do, of course. We are in the cat bird's seat! So sync your tree, back it up and sit back to be "wined and dined" by software providers (figuratively of course). They really want your business! Since the announcement, all major software companies are offering deals and courting former FTM genealogists. They are even writing specific instructions and creating videos for the transition! Competition can create improvements. Now you know how you will spend that holiday cash! Follow our Bucks County Genealogical Society website on Facebook. We are trying to post every deal we hear of and all new developments. Change can be hard for some but it can be exhilarating too.

DATABASE INFO!

Marriages, deaths and miscellaneous notices from the Springtown Weekly Times, 1902-1918 were added to the database on 11/12/15.
On 11/17/15, we added over 11,000 names from the burial list of Bristol Cemetery, over 1,600 baptisms, confirmations, marriages and deaths from Our Parish Record 1881-1886, and over 500 names from the East Swamp Mennonite Cemetery. Additionally, gravestone transcriptions from 6 smaller cemeteries were added on December 14, including Penns Park United Methodist Cemetery, New Hope Cemetery, Fountainville Cemetery, Morris Family Cemetery, Rowland Family Cemetery, and Christopher Day Cemetery. The database now contains:

         25,795 birth and baptism records
         18,604 marriage records
       102,154  death and burial records
         38,130 other miscellaneous records

HistoryGeo.com - database of first landowners
ProQuest.com - online library

The full list has links from Animaps to Zabasearch, and as Cathy says: "to fish in all ponds and wade in all streams!"   If you are a member, you may download the Genealogy A-Z list from the meeting handouts section of Members-only on our website.
