PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

To all BCGS Members and Friends:

It's Annual Meeting time! Every year in November, the Bucks County Genealogical Society holds its Annual Meeting, when we elect Board members for the following year, enjoy a home-cooked meal together, and share research stories with each other.  Our members say it's one of their favorite meeting formats, especially because it gives everyone a chance to get to know each other better!

This year, for the first time, we will be electing a new President.  And to make it even more exciting, we have TWO nominees for the position!  Please read the article below to learn more about Joann Cosgrove and Mary Butash, as well as the nominees for the remaining positions, all of whom are current Board members.

Both Mary and Joann have served BCGS diligently as Board members over multiple years, and both would like the opportunity to retain their current Board position if not elected President.  So, after ballots are collected and counted for the first six Board positions, a second election will be held to fill the VP Projects and Secretary positions, currently held by Joann and Mary, respectively.

Fun times at BCGS!  See you on November 7th!

Warm Regards,
Christine Roberts

Skeletons in the Closet

Our November program will begin with our annual business meeting, including elections for 2016 Executive Board positions.

Members and guests will then enjoy a Pot Luck Brunch of favorite family recipes. Please bring a dish to share with the group, along with a recipe or a story that goes with it. We are offering $5 off admission to anyone bringing a registered food item.*

Following our business meeting, members and guests will have the opportunity to share a story about a "skeleton in their family closet" and the research that uncovered the black sheep in the family!

*Please register both your potluck item if you are bringing one and your skeleton at our  Perfect Potluck page so we can plan accordingly! Our member showcase and potluck are always a big hit!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

Article IV of the BCGS bylaws states that the annual business meeting is to be held in November for the election of officers and directors for the next year. In addition to the nominees listed below, other nominations for officers and directors will be accepted at the November 7th meeting.

PRESIDENT: We are fortunate in having two candidates for the office of president.

Mary2013
Mary Butash. Mary lives in Jenkintown (Montgomery County) but joined BCGS because she was so impressed by the programs offered. Mary is retired from 45 years as a nurse, nurse practitioner and finally nursing educator at Roxborough Hospital School of Nursing. She is descended from a mechanical engineer and a registered nurse with Polish and Slovak ancestry. Mary has three grown children.

She says: "I love BCGS and want to continue to serve the membership as president.  For the past three years I have served on the Board as secretary and participated in the Facilities and Ancestry Fair committees.  I have presented three programs on genealogy, representing BCGS. I feel it is especially important to have a person for President who knows our history and how the organization is run.  As secretary, I think, I have seen the inner working as a whole as well as participated in all the decisions. I want to lead BCGS as it moves forward and remains strong for us in the future."

Joann Cosgrove.  Joann lives in Levittown and is retired after 42 years of nursing. Joann has Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors from Bucks County and Irish and German ancestors from Philadelphia. When not hunting down ancestors, Joann loves to sing with the Bucks County Women's Chorus and garden with Southern Bucks Garden Club.

She says:"  I have been a member of the BCGS Board for about 2 ½ years as VP Projects and Research. My roots are in Bucks County and I have lived here all my life. Researching my family for the past 20 years has been a wonderful experience. I love all the friendships I have made here and I would like to keep us moving forward in our genealogical endeavors. Sharing my passion for genealogy and helping others to reach their genealogical goals is the reason I would like to assume the role of President of our great group!"

Nominees for other offices are:

Jeff Sipler  - Vice President of Programs and Education. Jeff has served in this office for three years and is a charter member of BCGS.  He lives in Langhorne with his wife and two children. Jeff is a social studies teacher at Council Rock High School North in Newtown and can trace his family roots to 18th century Bucks County.

Pat Gessner - Vice President of Membership. Pat has served in this office for three years and is a charter member of BCGS. She lives in Doylestown, is happily retired and volunteers in an office at Doylestown Hospital. She has traced her ancestors to the 18th century in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and frequently bores her progeny (two children and three grandchildren) with genealogy research stories.

Marguerite Mogila - Treasurer.  Marguerite has served in this office for three years   and is also a charter member of BCGS. Her home is in Tennessee; however, she is staying in Newtown, PA. She is descended from farmers and aristocrats, church goers and non-church goers, and ancestors who fought on both sides of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. She is a member of the Washington Crossing Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and her roots go back to Ireland, Scotland, England, Denmark and Germany.

Cathy Ivins 2012 Cathy Ivins - Director - Publicity.  Cathy has served in this position for three years  and is also a charter member of BCGS.  She is a resident of Levittown and works as an Instructional Assistant and Student Council Advisor for Bristol Township School District. Cathy has two adult "descendants".  She is a coal-miner's granddaughter, with Polish, Italian and Irish roots, practicing genealogy without a license for 12 years! Cathy is now pursuing a "calling" in Genetic Genealogy.

Nancy Heath - Director -Website.  Nancy has served in this position for three years and is a charter member of BCGS. She  operates her own software development business, Town Place Associates, out of her home in Thorofare, NJ.  Nancy spends her spare time tracking down her ancestors in early Bucks County, as well as Hunterdon and Mercer counties in New Jersey.

Wayne Campbell is a charter member of BCGS and an active volunteer. You may find him at one of our meetings directing traffic, delivering coffee, or helping another member with research.

It is appropriate that his photo is taken in front of a wall of maps. This past summer, Wayne set out to hike the entire Appalachian Trail (AT).  The AT is 2200 miles long and passes through 14 states from Georgia to Maine.  Wayne has wanted to hike this trail since he was a teenager.  He retired last year and decided to give it a try.

He started in Harper's Ferry, WV and ended in northern Massachusetts, just short of Vermont.  That's "only" 527 miles, almost ¼ of the AT.  Wayne says none of it was flat.  It was generally uphill or down.  It was always too hot, too cold, or too wet.  Sometimes all in the same day.  Wayne got lucky and only had one blister his entire time on the trail.

He lost 8 pounds during his hike, but does NOT suggest hiking the AT as a weight-loss strategy.   It's way too hard.   Most AT hikers are asked the same questions:
  • No, he didn't hike alone. The AT is a very social place.  He never camped alone and never hiked more than a few miles without meeting other hikers.
  • No, he did not see any bears (but some of his friends did).  Yes, he saw many snakes - mostly small garter snakes, big (but harmless) black snakes, and a few mean-looking rattlesnakes.
  • Yes, he carried everything on his back.  A typical pack weight was 32 pounds.  Usually he carried about 4 days of food.  He resupplied occasionally in the many small towns along the way.
  • He slept in tents, shelters, hostels, rooms in private homes, under pavilions, and in hotels and motels.
The best things about hiking the AT were the friends made along the way, the scenery, hugging the largest oak tree he ever saw, the experience of small town America, and eating.  Hikers cannot carry enough to satisfy their hunger, food is very heavy.  So when AT hikers enter town they tend to enjoy hearty meals.  There was a fellow on the trail recently who ate a half gallon of ice cream, and then washed it down with a cheeseburger, fries and a large soda.  That's a HEARTY meal!

The worst things about the trail were: smelling bad (imagine not bathing for 4 or 5 days), being dirty for days on end, noisy campsites, rattlesnakes, ticks (Lyme disease), and big spiders.  Wayne claims to have seen the largest spider of his life in NY.  He and his friends were allowed to camp behind a restaurant one night and as they were setting up camp, one of the staff told them to watch out for the bear who shows up about 9:30 when employees take out the garbage.  That's when they noticed that the game commission had set up a bear trap about 50 feet from where they were camping.  Wayne and his friends went to bed late that night.

Wayne plans to return to the AT next spring to try the rest of the trail.

REFRESHMENTS ARE NEEDED FOR THE DECEMBER MEETING

Can you help for this meetings or a later date?

We need someone to pick up two containers of coffee at Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts. Both places supply the cups, stirrers, sugar and cream.  You will reimbursed by the BCGS treasurer at the meeting.  We also need one person to bring a snack.

Also, if you are a member and bring refreshments to a meeting, the meeting fee is waived. If you are a non-member and bring refreshments,  the meeting fee is reduced from $10 to $5.
